Two college football blue bloods reignite a historic rivalry as the Fighting Irish secure a high-profile home-and-home series, ending a three-decade hiatus against the storied Big Ten program.
Notre Dame continues to squash the narrative that they'll struggle to schedule games with notable teams from the Power 4 conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC). Today, it was announced that the Fighting Irish would play a home-and-home series with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in late October of 2032 and 2033. It'll be their first meeting in over 30 years.
In 2032, the Irish will travel out to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers for the first time since 2001. That game will be played on Saturday, October 30th. The following year, in 2033, Nebraska will travel to South Bend to take on the Fighting Irish inside of Notre Dame Stadium. That game will take place on Saturday, October 29th. The last meeting between these two blue bloods in South Bend ended in a 27-24 overtime game when the then-ranked No. 1 Cornhuskers defeated the then-ranked No. 23 Fighting Irish.
These two historic programs have met a grand total of 16 times on the gridiron but haven't met since 2001. Prior to those meeting, the last time Notre Dame and Nebraska met on the field was during the 1972 Orange Bowl where the Cornhuskers downed the Irish 40-6 in a blowout game. This renewed home-and-home series will be an iconic clash between two house-hold names in college football.
According to the press released from Notre Dame, both of these programs have been ranked in each of the last three meetings. Currently, the outlook for Nebraska looks bleak and Notre Dame remains one of the top contenders for the national title this season, but as we know in this portal/NIL era of college football, things are subject to change on an annual basis. A return to glory for Nebraska would bode well for this renewed home-and-home series between these two blue bloods.
Notre Dame is still looking to continue building out their 2032 and 2033 schedules. As things stand today, there are some noteworthy programs on the schedule for both 2032 and 2033. There are still three more slots on the 2032 schedule and three more slots to fill on the 2033 schedule. As of today, over the next several seasons, Notre Dame has games scheduled against named programs in all four of the P4 conferences.
