A controversial bye week slide sees the idle Fighting Irish leapfrogged by Georgia and Indiana, sparking fierce debate over strength of schedule and questionable logic among voters.

The Associated Press Top 25 rankings came out and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-1) fell to No. 5. While this ranking isn't as absurd as the Coaches Poll, it's a bit of a head scratcher as well.

Notre Dame was off this week, as was Georgia, who checked in one spot behind the Irish last week. Georgia lost to Auburn and Notre Dame lost to BYU. This weekend, BYU lost in overtime to UCF, which apparently hurt Notre Dame's resume enough to see them fall behind both Georgia and Indiana. What's odd, however, is that Georgia lost to an Auburn team that went out and got destroyed by LSU this weekend, which apparently is worse than BYU losing in overtime on the road to UCF, who is now 4-3.

Wisconsin, who Notre Dame beat 41-13 in week one, jumped into the Top 25 with a 24-7 beatdown victory over USC. Apparently, Notre Dame's resume wasn't helped by this, as they fell behind Indiana, who needed overtime to beat a now 4-3, unranked Michigan team. That was a game that was tied 6-6 going into overtime, but that was enough for the AP voters to leap them in front of the idle Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame's ranking at the end of the season will be decided by what they do on November 7th against the No. 1 ranked Miami Hurricanes and the now No. 19 SMU Mustangs on November 21st. Both team earned blowout wins, with Miami beating Pittsburgh by a 52-23 score and SMU beating California by a 59-20 score. But it is worth noting the absolutely absurdity of how these decisions are made.

BYU, who has wins over No. 5 Notre Dame (28-24) and No. 22 Arizona (28-17), is now ranked No. 8, which is five spots below Georgia and three spots behind Notre Dame. Keep in mind that Georgia and Notre Dame also have two Top 25 wins, combined. Yeah, try and make that make sense. Georgia's best win is over No. 10 Alabama (20-17), and Notre Dame's best win is over now No. 25 Wisconsin (41-13). The Bulldogs lost to a 4-3, unranked Auburn team at home (28-24), while the Cougars lost on the road to a now 4-3, unranked UCF team in overtime. But somehow, that means Georgia has a better resume than BYU.

It's as silly as No. 10 Alabama being ranked ahead of No. 16 Tennessee, despite both having identical records and Tennessee dominating Alabama just one week ago by a 26-10 score. This is part recency bias and part just stupidity.
