Marcus Freeman breaks down a gritty victory over Navy, addressing defensive adjustments, Jerome Bettis Jr.’s breakout moment, and how the Irish avoided a trap-game letdown before Miami.

Notre Dame is back in the win column this week after a 35-13 victory of the Navy Midshipmen to improve to 7-1 on the season. After a very sloppy and disappointing first half of defense, the Irish cleaned things up and held the Midshipmen scoreless in the second half. Offensively, they got the job done and were very efficient, scoring touchdowns on five of their eight possessions. After this frustrating win, head coach Marcus Freeman gave his thoughts on his 50th win as the head coach at Notre Dame.

Here are some of Freeman's main quotes from today's post-game press conference:

FREEMAN ON GETTING POINTS AT THE END OF THE FIRST HALF

"Yeah, it was huge," Freeman stated. "We were down 13 to seven at that point. And they just went down and scored. And it's like, come on now. Tight now our defense is reeling and we need our offense to kind of keep things calm. And I thought the drive right before half was huge. And then to come back in the second half and - I don't know how many plays it was - but you know, to go out and execute and now all of a sudden you're up double digit points and I thought it was a good, really good middle eight period that our team had."

FREEMAN ON JEROME BETTIS JR.

"I thought he really did a good job of taking advantage of his opportunities," Freeman explained. "I thought he had a really good week of practice. He's had good weeks of practice. And as we talked about as a staff, if there's opportunities to be intentional about trying to get guys in the game that can help us, then we're going to do it. And so the ability to say, 'hey, put him in there in this moment' and then the play calls and the defense dictates whether the ball goes to him, but he capitalized off of his opportunities, which is most important for a wide receiver."

FREEMAN ON THE FIRST HALF STRUGGLES ON DEFENSE AND LOOKING AHEAD TO MIAMI

"Look, I can't get in every person's head," Freeman said. "Nobody can except for that person. Let's talk about why you didn't do. Like, you don't want to create chaos and panic about why something happened. That's what I've talked to this group about. It's 14 to 13. We can create a narrative that, oh, they were thinking about Miami. No, what we have to focus on, why didn't you, what did they do to execute versus our defense, and what did we not do on offense in the three and outset to make sure we executed?"
