Rising 2028 edge Asa Burch felt "elite" after Notre Dame's standout visit, connecting with coaches and receiving an offer.

By Bryan Ault

Notre Dame hosted a group of very talented players for unofficial visits this past weekend, and one of the more intriguing players on campus was Warren, Ohio/Harding standout Asa Burch. The visit with the 6-5, 220-pound edge from the 2028 class could not have gone better.

Burch’s recruiting has picked up considerable steam in recent weeks, having earned offers from Ohio State Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Michigan State, and Missouri.

Notre Dame wisely decided to jump in the mix for his services. Burch really connected with director of scouting DJ Bryant, who he already had a great relationship with during his time at Penn State.

"It was great," Burch said of the visit to Notre Dame. "They toured me around, met everybody. Coach DJ, he called me and my dad late last night. He was just talking about how we felt about the experience, the campus, the culture. He did end up offering me. I was jumping up and down. Me and my dad were really happy and stuff. I was ecstatic.

".... He recruited (former Penn State defensive end and current Tennessee Volunteer) Chaz Coleman who is my older cousin," continued Burch. "When I finally got to meet him in-person, it was like talking with old family and stuff."

Burch also connected with head coach Marcus Freeman, who he has a special connection with coming from the Buckeye State.

"Coach Freeman is just a player coach," said Burch, who plans to make a verbal commitment by the end of his junior season this fall. "I want a coach that cares about me and a position coach that cares about me, so heavily, that we’re like a family, like really, really tight. When we spoke to him, he knew where we were from. He’s been to Youngstown before, Cleveland and Akron, he understands and stuff."

The one word that kept coming up for Burch about his visit was “elite.” From the campus, facilities, coaching staff, alumni, academics and players, Burch described everything with that five-letter word.

"They are building a whole new building for just the football team," he said. "Their strong tradition of being just one big family and no one is bigger than the team, that really stood out."

The all-around package that Notre Dame offers really stood out to Burch.

"You’re going to win, you’re going to get an elite education,” he added. "You never hear anyone with a Notre Dame degree not have a job. I can really say this: them, Michigan and Ohio State are absolutely crazy. Really just Notre Dame and Michigan, their alumni goes years and years. They were explaining it, they didn’t go in-depth about it, but I can tell it really is important.”

Burch is ranked as the No. 113 overall player in the country according to On3.
