Yesterday, Notre Dame has their first spring practice of the 2026 offseason and it did not disappoint. There were several players on either side of the ball that had a strong first day. Some of the players we expected like Tae Johnson on defense and Guerby Lambert on offense. But there were some players who made good strides in day one and impressed offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock.
"I was happy for Cam Williams," Denbrock said about the redshirt sophomore. "I think Cam has continued to make progress. His issue up to this point has been more about consistency than it has making the ‘wow’ plays, but I thought he did a better job of that today. I'll have to go study the tape a little bit closer from play to play, but really excited for him, because I think every time you put yourself in a scenario where it's a competitive atmosphere and you're making plays, confidence builds and he needs that as much as anybody on our team."
Williams wasn't the only highly talented receiver that impressed Denbrock in yesterday's practice. Ohio State transfer Mylan Graham had a solid first day in a blue and gold uniform. He's another very talented player that will make it difficult for Denbrock and the offensive coaching staff to keep off the field this fall.
"He's explosive, twitchy and competitive," Denbrock explained. "He's somebody that I think can develop within the framework of this offense to be a really solid football player. I'm excited to watch him grow throughout the spring once he gets a little more comfortable with what we do and how we do it. But the tools are there for him to really make a strong contribution to what we're doing."
Williams and Graham are two of the highest-ceiling players in the entire receiving room but both are approaching this season with a bit of a different background. For Williams, this is his third spring and he's on the verge of breaking out. The light bulb hasn't fully gone on, but yesterday was a heck of a start to this offseason. He's a rising redshirt sophomore and will need to have a strong offseason to make a push in the receiver rotation.
Graham was expected to walk in and become a day-one starter by many; that's just the nature of the portal and what you expect when you get a receiver from Ohio State in the transfer portal. That being said, the Fort Wayne native is walking into an extremely talented room that's filled with high-level and talent, experience and production. His skillset makes him a fit within this offense, but he'll have some work to do to solidify himself in the six-man receiver rotation.
If Notre Dame wants to reach their full potential of winning a National Championship, they'll need players like Williams and Graham to continue to ascend this offseason. It was only the first day of practice and both players have the majority of the offseason to go, but if they can build on their first day out, they'll major contributors to the Notre Dame offense in 2026.
