The schools that has been coined 'O-Line U' over the last 10 to 15 years has a lot of expectations in front of them heading into the 2026 season. This will be, without a doubt, Joe Rudolph's most talented unit during his time at Notre Dame. This will also be one of the biggest offensive lines Notre Dame has had across the board since 2017. The depth is there and the talent is undeniable, but how will they fare this fall? Will they be just a Top 10 unit? Will they be a Top 5 unit? Will they be the best unit in the country?
All of that remains to be seen, but what we do know is that this unit will be a major driver of success for the Fighting Irish offense and the 2026 team as a whole. Head coach Marcus Freeman wishes to be a line driven program; so far, they haven't been consistently throughout his time at the helm. That narrative could and should change this season. There's a host of talent and experience returning to the Notre Dame offensive line this year. We talk about all of this and more in today's episode of the Irish Breakdown Podcast.

Here are some of the main topics we discussed on today's podcast:
On Why The Offensive Line Is The No. 1 Most Important Position Group...
"This year, Notre Dame has an extremely talented quarterback coming back, they lose two stud running backs in Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price and you have a host of talented, yet relatively inexperienced pass catchers. You need the offensive line to be the default. Let's say they have another bad-weather game; you don't want to be in a position where you need CJ Carr to throw the ball 35 to 40 times to come away with a win. Rather, it should look like the 2022 Clemson game where Drew Pyne only had to complete nine passes to win. The offensive line will be the default, and should be a driver of success in this year's offense."
On Joe Rudolph's Expectations This Upcoming Season...
"Offensive line is about mentality and mindset. Are you a group that wants to dominate your opponent? Are you a group that takes great pride in your craft? Those are all very important things. You can be as strong as you want, but do you know how to use that strength? You can be athletic as you want, but do you know how to use that athleticism? That's what bringing it all together looks like for Joe Rudolph in 2026. And if he can bring it all together, then he's going to have a great chance to put an elite offensive line on the field this year."
On Anthonie Knapp's Outlook On 2026...
"Anthonie Knapp is not a young guy anymore. Last year, he was still a young player even though he started 15 games in 2024. He was still a 19-year old sophomore. Now, you're going into year three and this is your third spring on campus. You've got 27 career starts under your belt and you've had some very good moments. He's played on some very big stages including a home playoff game, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl, on the road and at home against Texas A&M. You've won some of those battles and lost some of those battles. Now, it's time for him to take that next big jump and become a stud."
