Four-star lineman James Halter chooses Notre Dame, bringing his talent and legacy back to South Bend.

Notre Dame has gotten back on the board for the 2027 class by landing a commitment from offensive tackle James Halter. The Pittsburgh (Pa.) Central Catholic blocker committed to Notre Dame following his visit this past weekend to watch the Irish beat USC in the rain. The visit made an impact and Halter is now part of the 2027 class.

Halter was offered by Notre Dame in September, and from that moment the Irish were considered the team to beat. He made multiple trips to campus in the year prior to his visit to watch Notre Dame take on and beat USC, but the most recent trip sealed the deal and Halter decided it was time to join the class.

At 6-5 and 270 pounds with long arms and an athletic frame, Halter has the traits you want in an offensive tackle. He's on the thin side right now, but the frame is there for him to easily get up to 300 pounds. Despite his lack of size right now, Halter is a strong player that shows some pop in pass pro and the ability to get movement in the run game. As he fills out and matures physically his production in the run game should take off quite a bit, but he's already a stout pass blocker. That's due to his combination of foot quickness, smooth athletic skills, length and the fact he's an extremely fundamentally sound player for his game. That skillset projects quite well for the tackle position, which is certainly a need for Notre Dame in the 2027 class.

The Central Catholic standout is ranked as the No. 131 overall player in the country by 247Sports and the No. 154 overall player by Rivals. He earned a 4.0-star grade on the Irish Breakdown board and grades out in the Top 150 overall player range, but his upside is what makes him an intriguing prospect.

Notre Dame was part of a long list of suitors, as Halter also earned scholarship offers from Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Nebraska, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Auburn, Boston College, NC State, Minnesota, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, West Virginia, Northwestern and Rutgers.

Halter is the fifth player to commit to Notre Dame in the 2027 class. He joins Georgia quarterback Teddy Jarrard, Alabama linebacker Ellis McGaskin, Wisconsin defensive lineman Richie Flanigan and North Carolina snapper Sean Kraft.

Halter's father - Jordan Halter - played at Notre Dame from 1989 to 1993. He was a teammate of Jerome Bettis, Bryant Young and Jim Flanigan, who also have sons on the current Notre Dame team.
