College football’s premier defense invades Chapel Hill to stifle a struggling Tar Heel attack, pitting star safety Luke Talich against elite tight end Jelani Thurman in high-stakes individual battles.
The Notre Dame defense has been on an absolute tear to kick off the 2026 season. Through four games, the Irish rank 2nd in the country in points per game allowed (8.3), 1st in the country in yards per game allowed (199.3), 2nd in the country in yards per play allowed (3.6), have yet to allow a rush of 20 yards or longer, and have only given up a combined three touchdowns all season. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash is seemingly picking up where he left off in 2025 and the level of talent on this fast and aggressive unit is on full display.
This weekend, the Irish gear up to face a North Carolina offense that has struggled to put up significant points this season against P4 opponents. In their season opener, they scored 15 points in an ugly win over TCU in Ireland. In Week 3, they scored 20 points in a road loss to Clemson. If Ash and the Fighting Irish defense wish to keep up their steak of dominant defensive play, then they'll have to win these three key matchups Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
S LUKE TALICH
After sitting out the Purdue game with a wrist injury, senior safety Luke Talich doesn't have any injury designations for their road matchup against the Tar Heels. Talich is a player who usually rotates behind Brauntae Johnson, but a lower body injury to the Fort Wayne native thrusted the 6-4, 222-pound Wyoming native into the starting lineup.
Talich has shown his worth as a starter and will be tested once again this Saturday afternoon. This season, Talich has 10 tackles, 1.0 sacks, one pass defensed and one interceptions and he'll have the opportunity to add to that total when he faces North Carolina's stud tight end.
Matchup To Watch: It's no secret that the Tar Heels offensive game plan revolves heavily around tight end Jelani Thurman. The former Ohio State transfer leads the team in receiving yards and is only two catches shy of the team lead in receptions. The 6-6, 245-pound pass catcher has been targeted 18 times this season, has 11 receptions, 183 receiving yards and one touchdown. Talich will most likely be the safety matched up on the big-bodied tight end in coverage and will have to prevent him from picking up chunk plays in the passing game.
CORNERBACKS
Coming into this season, Notre Dame's cornerback room was thought to be one of the best in the nation. They're headlined by junior star Leonard Moore who is the best cornerback in college football. They also returned nickel cornerback Christian Gray and picked up DJ McKinney and Jayden Sanders in the transfer portal to go along with their talented pickups in the 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes.
This unit hasn't been tested too much this season, and after successfully shutting down Purdue's passing attack, this unit is 'as advertised' but will be tested again with one of the better receivers on the Notre Dame regular season schedule.
Matchup To Watch: North Carolina receiver Jordan Shipp was on my All-Opponent team earlier this offseason. He currently leads the team in receptions despite not finding the end zone yet in 2026. Shipp and Thurman share the team lead in targets and both players have made the most of their opportunities. Shipp will line up all over the offense. So far this season, he's played 34 snaps in the slot and 56 snaps split out wide. It's be a relatively even split against the two P4 opponents they've play as far as Shipp's alignment is concerned. Notre Dame's cornerbacks will have to identify where No. 1 is on the field at all times.
DC CHRIS ASH
After a rough three-game stretch to kick off his tenure in South Bend, Ash has strung together an exceptionally impressive string of defensive performances with the Irish. Since the Purdue game in 2025, Notre Dame has only allowed one opponent to score over 20 points and that was the visiting USC Trojans last October who scored 24 points.
The Irish have played 13 games since their second home game of the 2025 season. In 11 of those games, the defense hasn't allowed more than 15 points and have held opponents to 10 points or fewer in eight of those matchups. Their turnaround last season came against Arkansas, and Ash will be going against a familiar face when they travel to Chapel Hill.
Matchup To Watch: Back in January, North Carolina and head coach Bill Belichick elected to hire former Arkansas offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino who is one of the better offensive minds in college football. Last season, Petrino and Ash squared off in Fayetteville and Ash's defenses ended as the victor. Notre Dame held the Razorbacks to 365 total yards of offense which was almost 100 yards less than their season average, 13 points and forced two turnovers.
Ash and Petrino will square off again this Saturday afternoon but the outlook for Petrino's offense this season is less talented than the one he had at Arkansas a year prior, especially at the quarterback position. This is a matchup Ash should win handily, but it'll be interesting to watch it unfold on the field this weekend.
