Notre Dame hosted an impressive group of highly ranked defensive backs this weekend when the Irish hosted Texas A&M. One of the top players on campus was 6-3, 180-pound defensive back Tavares Harrington of Chicago (Ill.) Mt. Carmel. Harrington was excited to see the Fighting Irish coaching staff and take in the gameday experience, and the weekend exceeded expectations.
"I was looking forward to seeing the coaches, players and experience the environment,” Harrington told Irish Breakdown. “Everything was great. I got to see the coaches, and they called a great game. The team played hard and gave a huge reason for me why they are in my Top 5 schools.”
Despite a less than stellar performance by the Fighting Irish pass defense, Harrington was impressed with the interaction between coaches and players before and during the game. His focus was on how he would fit into the defensive back room and how the style of play fits his game.
“I can see myself playing in the defense,” Harrington elaborated. “They run a lot of man and let the corners play around with their alignment and leverage. I’m used to playing a lot of man, so I liked it.”
Harrington is a cornerstone of a confident Caravan defense that’s led the way to an impressive 3-0 record versus a tough schedule. They use his versatility by deploying him all over the field to negate the best opposing receiver on a weekly basis. He ranks 83rd nationally according to ESPN and has a confidence on and off the field that created a comfortable atmosphere as he spent time with other top defensive backs on the visit.
“I didn’t get a chance to talk to any of the commits really," Harrington shared. “I talked a lot with the other recruits, and they were also loving it! They had a great amount of cornerbacks that are highly ranked.
“I already knew most of them,” Harrington continued. “We know each other from prior visits and from 7 on 7, so we already have good relationships and all of us loved what we saw.”
Harrington has upcoming visits to Miami, Michigan and Illinois, as he looks to help his Mt. Carmel squad collect a third consecutive state championship. He’s also planning to sneak another trip to South Bend into his schedule.
“It was a great time,” Harrington said. “I can’t wait to get back. For sure want to get back again this year.”
He holds offers from programs like Michigan, Miami, Alabama, Missouri, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Washington, Indiana and Ohio State amongst others.
