Ohio State head coach Ryan Day hinted at a potential dual quarterback rollout against USC.
The Buckeyes are going to Los Angeles with one goal in mind: scoring just one more point than the USC Trojans. That is the goal on Saturday to keep their season on track.
In a normal circumstance, the Buckeyes would be viewing this game as an opportunity to showcase their full talents in front of the nation on primetime. Instead, with Julian Sayin out with an injury, their mindset has changed to just getting the job done.
To replace Julian Sayin, the Buckeyes just might be using both of their backup quarterbacks. Freshman Luke Fahey has been the first guy off the bench for the Buckeyes so far this season while Tavien St. Clair has been the second one to get work.
There is a belief that going with Fahey, especially late in the game against Indiana, gave the Buckeyes the best option to keep their offense in the same phase as it was before. St. Clair gives Ohio State a higher ceiling but allegedly gives them a deeper floor.
Whatever the case may be, Ryan Day is playing mind games with the situation. In a normal scenario, Ohio State would have publicly supported their true freshman quarterback instead of opening a quarterback competition during the bye week.
Maybe Day was just posturing, maybe Day was telling the truth, and they did have an open competition during the bye.
Regardless, it's now time for the Buckeyes to lock in on building the game plan for the Trojans, and in it, it sounds like both quarterbacks are on the table.
What will absolutely be on the table is Ohio State running the heck out of the football. The Wisconsin Badgers put it on film that the Trojans can be run on. With ease, they ran for 142 yards compared to USC's -17 yards on the day. That is the exact reason that they were able to easily win the football game last week.
That's the formula for the Ohio State Buckeyes this Saturday. They'll have their full arsenal back on the offensive line. They will be down Ja'Kobi Jackson in the backfield, but Isaiah West looked really good last week against Indiana.
It will be a day when the Buckeyes take the pressure off the quarterback, control the game on the ground, and give whoever is under center a couple of easy throws to take advantage of.
Day knows what to do, no matter who is taking the snap from the quarterback position.
