Ohio State's superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is chasing down the Triple Crown in Ohio State history.
It's only taken two full seasons, but Ohio State's superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is on the verge of an incredible accomplishment in his third and final season.
As things stand before the Buckeyes' week one matchup against the Ball State Cardinals, Smith is just eight touchdowns, 42 catches, and 340 yards away from being the career leader in each of those categories in Ohio State History.
Smith has done some pretty amazing things in his career at Ohio State, but this accomplishment would be at the top of the list.
Ohio State is often regarded as a wide receiver factory or Wide Receiver University, and it is not just because of its recent success. For decades, great receivers have worn the Scarlet and Gray, and Smith is the best of them all.
According to his career numbers, it will take about eight games for Smith to get each of the records. He is averaging .9 touchdowns, 5.6 catches, and 88 yards per game throughout his career. He is on pace to break the yards record in the first month of the season, but will need at least seven games, likely eight, to get the touchdown and catch records.
It certainly will not be easy, but Smith wouldn't want it that way.
Ever since the day that he set foot on Ohio State's campus, he has been 100 percent about the work and nothing else. He could have left Columbus and chased a massive check somewhere else, but he stayed.
What's important to him is team success, national championships, and his legacy in one place.
His third and final chapter of that legacy begins on Saturday when the Buckeyes welcome the Ball State Cardinals to Ohio Stadium. He would do well to have a big game in this one to take a major chunk out of that touchdown record.
But again, for Smith, that doesn't matter.
At a University that is known not only for the best football but also for the best receivers, Jeremiah Smith is going to go down as the best one ever. Barring injury, that statement will become a fact without any debate.
Not many do argue against it, but by the middle to three-quarter mark in the regular season, Smith is going to sit on top of the mountain in each of those three categories.
Not very many people get to say it, but he will be the triple crown champion at The Ohio State University.
Just another accolade to add to the list.
