Buckeyes' WR Jeremiah Smith's Heisman Trophy Odds In Jeopardy After this Week

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith's Heisman Trophy is in jeopardy after this entire week.

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith had the Heisman Trophy all but in his trophy cabinet on Saturday morning of last week.

Then, the next seven days happened.

Smith put up a 5-catch, 69-yard, one-touchdown game against Indiana, which is a fine football game, certainly not a Heisman-worthy performance, but he had a lot of goodwill banked at this point.

However, in that game, his quarterback was injured to the point that he is likely going to be out for the rest of the season. That obviously impacts what is going to happen for the final five games of Ohio State's season regarding Jeremiah's stats.

Smith would have been able to overcome that, but what happened on Saturday early afternoon might be too much to combat.

Miami's wide receiver and quarterback duo of Malachi Toney and Darien Mensah went off on Saturday against Pitt. In just the first half, Toney had 12 catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

Toney would finish the game with 16 catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns on the day. Funny enough, Smith has had three games with better production than that, which is laughable in and of itself.

The concern is consistent production from Smith with the new look Ohio State offense.

As things stand right now, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, Smith still has the shortest odds. He is currently at +105 to win the award, with Mensah behind him at +280. As the day began on Saturday, Toney was over +2000 to win the award, but after he went off, he is now +600.

It will be hard for him to overtake his quarterback, but it certainly is not impossible.

As things stand right now, Toney has 2 fewer catches and over 230 fewer yards than Smith this year. Jeremiah's 12 touchdowns are four more than Toney's. If the award were given out today, it would be Smith's very easily.

However, it is not given out until January and a lot can change between now and then.

For Smith, he couldn't care less about the award. The only thing that matters to him is his Buckeyes winning football games and working their way back to the College Football Playoff and the National Championship.

If he sweeps up this award along the way, great. If the Miami boys are able to track him down, it's no sweat off his back. Just as long as the Buckeyes are winning football games.
