Former Ohio State Buckeyes' star quarterback Justin Fields is getting yet another opportunity to revive his once-promising career.
On Monday, the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs came to an agreement to send the former first-round pick to Kansas City for a 2027 sixth-round pick. New York is also agreeing to pay $8 million of his signing bonus, and the Chiefs will pay him a salary of $3 million this year.
His role for the Chiefs could be a very unique one.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes is coming off a torn ACL that he suffered last season. His recovery status is publicly unknown at this point, but Fields' role could potentially be seeing some time as the starting quarterback while Mahomes finishes his recovery.
Beyond that, head coach Andy Reid is no stranger to creativity.
You can almost guarantee that when Mahomes is back on the field, there will be red zone and third down packages that include both Fields and Mahomes on the field at the same time.
Two players who can throw it, two players who can run it, two incredible athletes who pose a major threat to an opposing defense.
For Fields, this opportunity may be one of his last.
His time in Chicago came and went, ending in a lot of disappointment. The Bears traded him to Pittsburgh to give him a chance to start fresh. Well, Pittsburgh went and signed Russell Wilson to be their starter, and he never got the chance.
Then, Fields' career ventured to New York in what turned out to be a disaster of a season for everyone involved. It ends with him getting traded to Kansas City to try one last time to revive his career.
The Fields' case study is a fascinating one. He was so good as a college quarterback. He could make every throw, he could run like the wind, and he was an overall electric player.
In two seasons for the Buckeyes, one COVID-shortened year, Fields amassed 5,373 yards, 63 touchdowns to just nine interceptions. He had a 68.4 completion percentage at Ohio State. He added 867 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground.
To this point in his career, it has simply never translated to the NFL Game. He gets another opportunity to revive his career and continue on the Sam Darnold arc in his NFL career.
