Georgia head coach Kirby Smart tells the truth about the state of college football right now.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart opened up and opened up a can of worms on a podcast hit that he did on Thursday.
Smart joined The Next Round podcast, and the conversation got to debating why the Big Ten is better than the SEC right now. When it went here, everyone expected Smart to defend the SEC and say why it is still so much better than the Big Ten.
Instead, it was the exact opposite.
Smart changed his tune on the situation and admitted that the current status of College Football has the Big Ten ahead of the SEC.
The debate that came next was a fascinating one. The conversation went from being matter-of-fact to trying to find a reason or a theory as to why that is the case. Is it because everyone in the country can pay players? Is it because the Big Ten schools only have three or four really tough games? Or is it because Big Ten coaches do it better than SEC coaches?
If you think that one of the hosts brought up the final point, you'd be wrong. That was Smart's theory about the situation. He commented that the coaches in the Big Ten are doing more and accomplishing more with less.
It is a fascinating conversation and one that, while I believe is mostly cyclical, it is undeniable that the Big Ten is a better product than the SEC as it stands at this very moment.
The last three National Champions have come from the Big Ten, and heading into the 2026 season, there is a very good chance that we may be staring down another one this season.
Smart knows firsthand what it takes to beat the best of the Big Ten. He holds a 3-0 record against the Big Ten with wins over Michigan in the 2021 Semifinal, Oregon in Week One of 2022, and a win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on New Year's Eve Semifinal.
Smart has had success against the teams up north, but he does provide some pretty good points as to why the Big Ten is in a much better spot than the SEC nowadays.
The best part of the trend is that the Big Ten, specifically Ohio State, isn't letting off the gas. They are pushing the pedal down and are going to make it really challenging to let go of the crown.
Georgia is probably one of the only teams that will be able to begin tipping the scales back in favor of the SEC.
Buckeye Roundtable also offers a fan community and message board. We’d love to have you join us to talk all things Ohio State Buckeyes. Click the “Join” button at the top of the page to join our community for free.
