Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti hilariously lays out his plan to try to stop Jeremiah Smith.
Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti has never been one to mince his words. He always tells the truth and says what is on his mind. He is the best person to learn what the opponent's thoughts are because he just won't hold back.
On Tuesday, he was asked about how Indiana is looking at and planning to stop Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith. His answer was a perfect Cignetti-ism, as he commented that since he can't have 12 or 13 players on the field, he is "up the creek" when facing the best player in the country.
While he said that in jest, there was not even an ounce of disrespect at all from Cignetti or Indiana's side about what they are going to face on Saturday against the Buckeyes. It isn't even much of a conversation anymore at this point; Jeremiah Smith is the best football player in the country.
What he is doing consistently on Saturdays actually looks like a video game when you max out a character's attributes, and he is totally unstoppable.
Smith's numbers to this point in the year are laughable. He has 48 catches this year for 932 yards and 11 touchdowns. Believe it or not, he is actually second in each category this year, as there are some great wide receivers around the country.
However, what Smith shows on a weekly basis is that he can win at all levels of the field. He showed that he can win behind the line of scrimmage; he can win short; he can win in the intermediate; and he is unstoppable downfield.
There is nothing that he cannot do, and he is truly worth conservatively 14 points for the Buckeyes every single Saturday. He is incredible and a complete game-changing type of player.
If there is one team that has been (kind of) successful against him, it is the Indiana Hoosiers. Now, success against Smith is relative. In two games against Indiana, he has 11 catches for 178 yards and zero touchdowns.
Yes, I know he is averaging 5.5 catches and 89 yards per game, but the Hoosiers have kept him out of the end zone, which is impressive. How they are going to try to contain him remains a mystery, but they at least have something that can limit him.
This matchup is the ultimate chess match on Saturday. With all of the injuries to the Buckeyes' run game, they are going to have to dominate through the air. Julian Sayin needs to be at his best, and hopefully they can't throw two or three more players onto the field to cover Smith.
