Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith believes and knows that he stands above everyone else in college football.
If any other player in college football came out and said that he is the best player in the sport, he would be ridiculed, and rightfully so. That's a level of confidence that approaches cockiness and is often misguided.
However, in this situation, that couldn't be further from the truth.
Jeremiah Smith is the best player in college football, and the second-best player might as well be the 20th-best player; that's how much better Smith is from the field.
This also isn't a surprise to anyone. This argument could have been made after his first game in 2024 against the Akron Zips, and it would have been met with some slight pushback.
However, by the time that Smith put the exclamation point on the 2024-25 National Championship game on 3rd and 11 against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, it was definitely true. He etched his name in Ohio State lore and made his mark for the entire world to see.
This was two years ago.
Now, as he is further matured and grown into a monster on the field, he is by far and away the best player in college football.
On Wednesday, Smith's interview with On3's Chris Lowe was released, and in it, Smith expressed his confidence. He said that "nobody in college football is better than (him) when he is at his best."
He continued to say that he thinks everyone knows who the best player in college football is and "it is Jeremiah Smith."
First of all, how awesome is it that the young man has the confidence and awareness to know that he is the best player, and the claim isn't based on anything other than his production on the field.
In two seasons as a Buckeye, Smith has 163 catches for 2,558 yards and 27 touchdowns. For context, Smith has played in 29 out of 30 possible games in his career, and in those 29 games, he has 27 touchdowns.
He does everything better than everyone. He is bigger than the opponent, faster, stronger, smarter, and if the defender happens to guess right, Smith is the most competitive person almost ever.
If you were to build a football player in a lab, you would build Jeremiah Smith, and that isn't even up for debate.
Smith knows that he is the best player in the sport, and he is coming for it all in his final year in college football. It is championship or bust for Smith as he set his sights on the NFL and where he will go next.
