Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork is in favor of expanding the College Football Playoff "sooner rather than later" so that College Football can capitalize on its growing popularity.
Man, the plot is so far lost in all of college football.
Expanding the College Football Playoff to any larger than 16 is such a short-sighted view of the current state of college football.
Bjork went on the 11 Warriors Podcast last week and talked at length about the state of all Buckeyes athletic programs and what his outlook is on the state of College Football. It was a very in-depth interview, and in it, he described all of the reasons why he is in favor of expanding the College Football Playoff.
He said:
“I'm a believer in expansion. I think it's good for the game of football. The games have never been more popular. … The fact that we have content that is valuable, live sporting content, in today's environment where everything's sort of on demand, has never been more valuable. Producing more content produces more revenue, which we can give back to the players. I'm all for that side of the equation.
That's such a tough sentence to read, let alone type or say because college football is so far gone as a sport if we are talking about "producing more content" instead of producing the best product of football is such a disaster.
The Big Ten released its proposed 24-team playoff, and it is horrible. For a very long time, I was in the camp that the CFP should expand to 16 teams, and after seeing this, I am vehemently against it.
People are so addicted to trying to make the college football postseason the same as the college basketball postseason, but they don't realize the cost.
Yes, everyone loves March Madness. It is a fantastic product, and it is really fun to watch. However, it makes the sport relevant for just 3 weeks in March and rarely produces the most deserving National Champion.
The NCAA Basketball Tournament makes the regular season practically useless. For example, this very article is being written just minutes before the tip-off between the No. 2 Houston Cougars and the No. 6 Iowa State Cyclones.
Could you imagine if this game meant something for the tournament? Could you imagine the numbers, the viewership, the suspense it would produce? That doesn't exist in college basketball because, guess what, they are making the tournament no matter what.
One of the special parts about college football is the life-or-death games that take place during the season. We have already seen the death of these to some extent because in the past, the 2024 Buckeyes would have never made the Playoffs after a loss to Michigan.
Now, if we go to 24 teams, is there a world where teams are resting their starters in their final game because they are locked into the Playoffs? That will absolutely start to happen.
But hey, the opportunity to produce content is at an all-time high, so we have to expand the Playoffs.
If three and four-loss teams are making the playoffs, we have a major issue in College Football, and that seems to be the way things are trending.
Any postseason modifications would take place in 2027-28, as the deadline has passed to change the 2026 postseason.
We'll see what happens, but there has to be an end to expansion at some point, and hopefully that point is sooner rather than later.
