Ohio State's superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith made history on Saturday afternoon against the Purdue Boilermakers.
Midway through the second quarter, Smith ran a corner-post up the center of the field and hauled in a perfect throw from quarterback Julian Sayin for a 35-yard touchdown. The touchdown score puts his name in the Ohio State history books, again.
Smith's reception against Purdue was Smith's 25th receiving touchdown in just his 25th career game at Ohio State. He became the fastest Buckeye receiver to reach 25 touchdowns, breaking David Boston's record of 30 games.
Saturday's entry into the history books is yet another one in the already storied and decorated receiving career.
Ever since stepping on campus in Columbus, Smith has been the most impactful player for Ohio State. In his first game as an 18-year-old against the Akron Zips, he dropped his very first pass attempt that likely would have scored.
From there, it has been a rapid uphill ascension. Smith finished his first game with six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. It was the first of seven straight games in which Smith scored a touchdown to start his career.
In that start, each of those games he had over 70 yards receiving and hit the century mark twice.
Ohio State Gameday: Buckeyes Travel to West Lafayette to Take on the Purdue Boilermakers
The Ohio State Buckeyes face off against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette. The Buckeyes are massive favorites in the game and ...
The rest of his freshman season was nothing short of spectacular. He finished with five games over 100 yards, and the crown jewel of the year came in the Rose Bowl against the top-ranked Oregon Ducks.
In that highly-anticipated matchup, Smith finished with seven catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns. It was his welcome to the national stage that was bookended by the game-sealing catch in the National Championship against Notre Dame.
His sophomore campaign has been more of the same production. Through eight games, he has already gone over 97 yards four different times while hitting the century mark three times. He has scored at least one touchdown in six of the eight games; the only two were Week 1 against Texas and Week 8 against Wisconsin.
The former five-star recruit has been so impressive throughout his time in Columbus, and will have a very good argument to be the top pick in next year's 2027 NFL Draft.
Before getting into the draft talk, there is unfinished business at Ohio State. To get to where the Buckeyes want to go, they will need Smith to continue to be the best all-around football player in the country.
There are no signs that he will be slowing down anytime soon.
