Ohio State landed a major commit with family ties who is ready to be a part of something special in Columbus.

There is no such thing as having too many Smiths on the roster.

Earlier this week, the Ohio State Buckeyes landed Angelo Smith, the brother of star wideout Jeremiah Smith, who has taken over college football in his two seasons in Columbus.

While Jeremiah was a can't-miss prospect, little brother Angelo isn't the generational talent that his big brother is. Angelo is a three-star recruit, labeled by some scouting services as an "Athlete." He is likely going to be a safety for the Buckeyes and is set on making his own path.

Smith committed to Ohio State over Miami, Toledo, and Oklahoma State. Speaking with Tom Loy of 24/7's Bucknuts, he cited three people who were major contributors to his decision:

"Coach (Ryan) Day, Coach Walt [Tim Walton, secondary coach], and Coach G [Matt Guerrieri, safeties coach] all played a part in my committing," Smith told Bucknuts. "They wanted me to be a part of something special."

Smith didn't mention his big brother in the decision, but he also stated that Ohio State "felt like home" to him and that he is ready to become a valued member of the scarlet and gray.

What he lacks in size, he makes up for with his football IQ. Standing at just 5-foot-11, Smith will give up a lot of height when on the field, but his processing stands out. At that size, he is noted as a very physical defender and a guy who plays with little fear.

Smith has spent much of his high school days playing as a single-high safety roaming the middle of the field, making plays from there. He hasn't spent much time guarding receivers one-on-one, so he can improve in man coverage. With that said, he projects as a multi-year starter at the Power Four level. If you're curious, he has a whole recruiting profile on 24/7 Sports.

Ohio State gets a lot of credit for developing top-level NFL talent, but it rarely gets the credit it deserves for developing safety talent. Vonn Bell, Jordan Fuller, Malik Hooker, Ronnie Hickman, Lathan Ransom, and Jordan Hancock can all attest.

There likely isn't a Hall-of-Fame player in that group, but they are high-quality pros who have shown longevity in the league. Caleb Downs is undoubtedly next up in that group, and he'll be a surefire top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. It could even be in the top five.

As for Smith, he joins a perpetually elite defense and will look to continue that success by adding some depth to the back end.
