Ohio State Offers Intriguing FBS Quarterback in Transfer Portal cover image

The Ohio State Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day are beginning to make some noise in the transfer portal this offseason.

As the Ohio State Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day begin to shift their focus towards the offseason, the transfer portal has been a major talking point surrounding the program.

While Day and the rest of the coaching staff have lost multiple players to the portal this offseason, the Buckeyes are now in the hunt for another offensive playmaker.

According to a social media post on Monday, former Washington State quarterback Jaxon Potter has received an offer from the Buckeyes.

Potter, who was originally a three-star quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class, did not land on many Division I schools’ radar during his high school career. However, the California native would eventually commit to Washington State, putting him in a position to compete for a starting position.

After taking a redshirt year as a freshman and seeing minimal playing time in 2024, Potter eventually received his opportunity in the Cougars’ first three games of the 2025 season. During the stretch, he managed to throw for 604 passing yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Unfortunately for Potter, his performance against the North Texas Mean Green ultimately led to former head coach Jake Dickert benching him in favor of veteran quarterback Zevi Eckhaus. In his final start of the 2025 season, Potter struggled, completing 16 of his 23 pass attempts for 139 yards and three interceptions.

With Potter failing to see the field for the rest of the season, it was no surprise that the young playmaker would enter the transfer portal this offseason. In addition to the Buckeyes’ pursuit of him, Potter has also received an offer from Old Dominion, according to his social media.

Ohio State’s quarterback position took a massive hit this offseason when former four-star prospect Lincoln Kienholz announced his decision to enter the portal. Shortly after leaving the program, Kienholz committed to the Louisville Cardinals under head coach Jeff Brohm.

While Potter may not be in the running to be the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback for the 2026 season, the 6-foot-5, 205 lbs. playmaker could provide additional depth for Day and the offense. 2025 Heisman Trophy Finalist Julian Sayin is expected to be back under center for Ohio State next year, with former five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair being part of the mix.
