Ohio State President Ted Carter resigned his post as the Ohio State President after self-reported "inappropriate relationship."

The Ohio State Buckeyes' world was shaken early on Monday as the former Ohio State President, Ted Carter, stepped down from the position after reporting an inappropriate relationship.

His resignation was announced after confessing to the University's board of Trustees that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with "someone seeking public resources to support her personal business."

The university released an official statement on Wednesday that provided the information.

In it, Carter made the following statement, “For personal reasons, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my role as president of The Ohio State University. I disclosed to the board of trustees that I made a mistake in allowing inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership."

Carter furthered his statement by saying that he believes that they "made much progress during (his) time at Ohio State." Ultimately, for whatever reason, he decided that he had given someone inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership.

No further details have surfaced at this point as to what exactly that access was.

Carter became the 17th president of the university in January 2024. His tenure lasted just 26 months. Prior to his time in Columbus, Carter was the former Vice Admiral in the United States Navy and was also the President of the University of Nebraska from 2020 to 2024.

Carter's number one initiative in Columbus was the long-term strategic plan called "Education for Citizenship 2035," which was intended to help grow Ohio State over the next decade.

Inside that plan, there were several initiatives that included rolling out new scholarships, investments in six specific new colleges, an AI initiative, and an innovative $100M investment in attracting top faculty to Ohio State.

Beyond this plan, Carter's time in Columbus can be characterized by expanding research, strengthening partnerships with industry, and shaping the future of higher education.

Carter's plans come to a screeching halt with the news on Monday.

The University announced that it will provide updates on the change in leadership in the days to come.

Carter becomes just the second President in Ohio State's history to serve in the role for less than 2.5 years. The only other before him was the second President of the University, Walter Q Scott, who served from 1881 to 1883.
