While many Ohio State Buckeyes’ fans were enjoying a successful early National Signing Day period for the program, the fanbase was shocked to hear the recent news of offensive coordinator Brian Hartline on Wednesday morning.
College football insider Pete Thamel reported that Hartline was expected to take the head coach position for the USF Bulls.
When asked about Hartline’s decision, Day told reporters on Wednesday that he is “really happy” for his assistant coach and his new opportunity.
“I’m really happy for [Hartline] and his family,” Day said. “The fact that he gets an opportunity to do this, he’s put a lot of hard work here at Ohio State as a player and now as a coach, so that’s part of the profession. As a head coach, it’s gratifying to see one of your assistants get one of these opportunities. I think this is a great opportunity for him, and I’m looking forward to see what he does, so that’s exciting for [Hartline].”
Day would also go on to claim that Hartline will stick with the team for the Big Ten Conference Championship Game on Saturday and the 2025 College Football Playoffs.
Hartline, since becoming the Buckeyes’ wide receiver coach back in 2018, has quickly become one of the best college recruiters in the nation.
During his seven years as the program’s wide receivers coach, the 39-year-old managed to land and develop multiple talented pass catchers for Ohio State, including the likes of Marvin Harrison Jr., Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate, and most notably, Jeremiah Smith.
Now, Day and the entire program must make an important decision regarding the team’s offense coordinator role prior to the 2026 season.
One familiar name that recently became available is former Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who was relieved of his duties with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this season.
Kelly was the play caller for Ohio State last year during the incredible National Championship run, as the Buckeyes were an offensive juggernaut in the 2024 College Football Playoffs.
However, Day and the Buckeyes are focused on the task at hand, which is the program’s matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday. With Ohio State in the running for another title, Hartline will surely want to end his time in Columbus with another National Championship.
