Ohio State freshman Chris Henry Jr. gets the nod of approval from star Jeremiah Smith on Saturday.
If anyone knows freshman success, it is Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith.
Smith came to Ohio State, and from the literal first game of his career, he has been dominating college football. Now, as Smith enters his final season in Columbus, the wide receiver position is in good hands going forward.
The big fish in the Ohio State 2025 recruiting class was the 6'5" Chris Henry Jr. Henry has the potential that is sky high. His ceiling is Jeremiah Smith, and the Buckeyes are hoping that they are going to replace one phenom with another.
After Saturday's Spring Ball practice, Smith, while shaking his head, said, "he's the next one up."
If anyone is going to teach Henry the right way to do things, it is Smith.
For Henry, this season is going to be a very important one for him. The Ohio State wide receiver room behind Smith is a major question mark. The Buckeyes brought in two transfers in Devin McCuin and Kyle Parker, who are hopefully going to add a little bit of juice to the room.
The other incumbent in the receiver room is Brandon Inniss, who was decent for the Buckeyes last year, but is going to be required to have much more impact next season.
There are a lot of question marks behind Jeremiah Smith, and while there are question marks, there is an opportunity for Henry to make an impact on this room.
If Henry can come in and be that guy in his first year, the Buckeyes offense is going to be a major problem for opposing defenses. They will have two 6'4"-plus threats on the outside that will take a lot of pressure off of the other guys in the room to just do their jobs.
Beyond this year, Henry has the potential to take the baton directly from Jeremiah and be the next great Ohio State wide receiver. The Buckeyes' wide receiver lineage is unprecedented over the past 10 years.
There have been six first-round wide receiver picks since 2016, with Carnell Tate joining that list in just about a month and Jeremiah adding to that list in next year's draft.
Henry has the opportunity and the responsibility to be the next great guy for that position group. His mentor, Jeremiah Smith, has what it takes to be just that.
