Ohio State's Ryan Day Wants to Overhaul Roster: Urban Meyer

One season removed from winning a national title, Ohio State is looking to copy the success of Indiana after the Hoosiers won the College Football Playoff national championship on Monday night.

The NFL is known for being a copycat league. Because of the wide scope of the sport, college football has a harder time being able to copy the success of winning programs.

However, Indiana's blueprint for making the CFP two seasons in a row has one aspect OSU wants to emulate: experience.

Per The Sporting News, the average starter for IU had 3.86 years of experience. The age helped the Hoosiers win their first-ever national title.

Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day took notice.

During an episode of "The Triple Option" this week, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer claimed Day wants to restructure his roster to rely on experienced players over freshmen studs.

“I actually talked to coach Day about that yesterday," Meyer said. "We talked before the game (CFP national championship) and he mentioned that, that everybody is now, and everyone's talking about it.

"How do we get a locker room of grown (expletive) men that's been through it? As opposed to coaching that 21-year-old... is a much different cry than that 18-year-old. You got a grown (expletive) man with experience that understands the game.”

Meyer pointed out that the Big Ten has had recent success in the CFP will older rosters.  Michigan, Ohio State and Indiana won the last three championships. Those teams had age on many of their opponents.

“I think the template has all been set now, with the Big Ten winning three years in a row (with the) most mature, veteran teams," Meyer said. “Every team average age is what... someone said they were about the same age as NFL teams.

"The average experience was almost four years. Someone threw that at me yesterday as well."

The Buckeyes relatively young roster (at least on offense) did well for most of the season. Ohio State was 11-0 before running into Indiana in the Big Ten championship.

Ohio State's season ended in a 24-14 loss to No. 10 Miami in the CFP quarterfinal. The Hurricanes were also an old team, and that showed against OSU.
