Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes landed the top quarterback recruit in the 2028 class, Christopher Vargas

The Ohio State Buckeyes received some incredible news on Saturday afternoon. Just three days into the 2026 Training Camp, it became official that the top quarterback in the 2028 class, Christopher Vargas, committed to play for the Buckeyes.

Vargas has all of the tools to be a star in college football. He stands at 6-foot-4 tall and still has room to fill out his frame as he continues to grow. He has been a three-sport athlete in high school, playing baseball and running track and field to buttress his abilities on the football field.

In his first two high school seasons, he has been solid from a statistical standpoint. As a freshman, he tossed 17 touchdowns and just north of 1,000 yards. Year two was much better as he completed over 75 percent of his throws for 1,825 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just two interceptions.

He enters his junior year with his college decision made, ready to tear up the competition for the next two years.

Vargas is the No. 4-ranked recruit in the nation for the 2028 class; he is the No. 2 quarterback and the No. 1 recruit from Massachusetts. He has all the tools to be a great quarterback for the Buckeyes, and his situation is both unique and filled with potential.

If we just consider the timeline, Vargas would enroll at Ohio State for the 2028 season. So, if this year goes as planned, then Julian Sayin will be off to the NFL. If next year, 2027, goes as planned as well, then Tavien St. Clair will also be off to the NFL.

If both of those things happen, the door is open for Vargas to compete for the quarterback job from the first day that he steps on campus. In the scenario that he wins it, he will have the opportunity to be the guy in Columbus for three straight seasons.

Every single record that stands will be in jeopardy because Vargas has the talent to get them all.

Not only does Vargas bring every tool to the table, but he is the second piece in what is already a historic recruiting class for 2028. He joins wide receiver Jett Harrison, who is the top wide receiver in the 2028 class as well.

Ryan Day has once again flexed his muscles and has already begun assembling the top recruiting class in the country that's still two years out.

Ohio State's success isn't going to stop anytime soon.
