Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is now faced with another crazy development in college football.
If it felt like the sport that we love has become the Wild West, that would be the understatement of the year. Kids don't have any commitment; they can go to as many schools as they want, they are making life-changing money, and now they can come back from the NFL.
Yes, they can now come back from the NFL to college football. It's hard to comprehend, but it is the reality in today's sport.
The floodgates are now totally open after Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers have signed two former Ole Miss Rebels after they have been through an entire NFL Training Camp. Dae'Quan Wright was the first one to make the move from the Cleveland Browns to the LSU Tigers, and he was followed by Zxavien Wright, who comes to LSU via the New Orleans Saints.
On Monday, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day weighed in on the situation. In a long answer, he said, "If there are teams that have some players out there who are cut from NFL rosters that are gonna be on other teams, we have to at least consider it and look at it. Do I like anything about it? Absolutely not, but we gotta do what’s right for Ohio State."
His hand is unfortunately being forced and so are many other coaches.
There are so many angles to this conversation, but the fact of the matter is, yes, if there are players coming back to college football and they make your team better, then hand them a jersey.
I can't imagine that this stays reality for a long time but who knows anymore.
One of the major problems with what is going on with LSU is the fact that the season starts in less than two weeks for just about everyone.
There has been a lot of team building that has already gone on, and a lot of chemistry has developed. Furthermore, the installs are all complete, and the team is in game mode.
Both of those specific players played for Kiffin last year at Ole Miss, so they definitely have a leg up in that specific conversation. The plot will really thicken when this becomes more common, and there is a lot more significant movement.
Hopefully we never get to that point, but what's stopping anyone now? At least we all know that Day will throw the Buckeyes' name in the hat if the player could make them better.
