There are not many blue bloods in both college football and college basketball; Ohio State is one of them.
Everyone knows that the Buckeyes have dominated college football for the better part of the last 30 years. You can nearly pencil them in Week 1 as a double-digit winner and a team that is going to be competing for a National Championship each and every year.
Not many people know that a similar story can be told on the hardwood. Over the past 5-10 years, Ohio State's basketball program has taken a step back, but that doesn't change the fact that they had several stretches in the early 2000s when they were one of the best teams in the country.
On Wednesday, a list was released that labeled the top programs in the country with their time spent as the top-ranked team in the country as the lone piece of criteria.
Ohio State has appeared 120 times as the No. 1 team in football and 37 times as the No. 1 team in basketball. The 120 stops on the gridiron are the second most in history, while their 37 are the 10th most in college basketball.
It's been 15 years since the Ohio State men's basketball team held the top spot. That 2010-11 season featured names such as Evan Turner, David Lighty, Jon Diebler, and yes Mark Titus.
Before that, the Buckeyes spent just a couple of weeks at the top of the charts in 2006-07, which ended a near 40-year drought dating back to 1961 as the previous time they were at the top of the charts.
On the football field, the Buckeyes are obviously a mainstay at the top of the sport. They are the gold standard in College Football, who expect to be at the top of the charts week after week.
The basketball team is still a ways away from being back to National prominence. They are likely a program cleanout and rebuild away from that ever being a reality, while the football team is going to expect to be competing for the National Championship in 2026.
It is safe to say that even though it sometimes doesn't feel like it, Buckeyes fans are spoiled, and they get to watch a winning program in both the fall and the winter.
Buckeye Roundtable also offers a fan community and message board. We’d love to have you join us to talk all things Ohio State Buckeyes. Click the “Join” button at the top of the page to join our community for free.
