Two key Ohio State transfers lose their Black Stripes during the middle of Spring Ball

Two of Ohio State's key transfers lost their black stripes on Saturday during Ohio State's Spring Ball practice.

The Black Stripe tradition can be seen as a "right of passage" for new Buckeyes who join the program. Whether it is a freshman who is entering the program after high school or a transfer, they start their career with a black stripe on their helmet until they do enough to lose it.

The tradition was started by Urban Meyer in the 2012 season and signifies when a new Buckeye earns his way into the brotherhood.

On Saturday, two of the key Ohio State transfers lost their stripes midway through their first extended football period in Columbus. Those two guys are safety Earl Little Jr. and wide receiver Kyle Parker.

Both of these players left their storied programs to come to Columbus to join the premier Big Ten program and the premier program in the entire country, and both of them have incredibly large responsibilities.

Little has major shoes to fill as he is tasked with replacing superstar and potential top-10 pick Caleb Downs in the back of Ohio State's secondary.

Little comes from Florida State, where he was the leader of that defense that struggled last season. After two years at Alabama, Little transferred to Florida State, where he appeared in 24 games for the Seminoles.

He finished his time there with 91 total tackles, four interceptions, three tackles for loss, and one sack over the course of two seasons. The Buckeyes are going to put a lot of responsibility on him at the back of their secondary in 2026.

On offense, Parker is joining a group on the outside that has to continue to uphold the standard for what it means to be a Buckeye wide receiver. The leader of that group, Jeremiah Smith, can't do it all on his own. He is going to need some support, and the Buckeyes are going to look for Parker to be that.

Last year, Parker had 31 catches for 330 yards and four touchdowns for the LSU Tigers. Not only is he tasked with being one of the key transfers for the Buckeyes, but he also needs to elevate his game to levels he has never been at before.

These two veteran players join Ohio State to provide a veteran presence but also to provide stability at both of their position groups as they both go through major transitions.

On Saturday, they took their first step as they lost their black stripes.
