Johnson becomes the fourth scholarship player to enter his name into the transfer portal this offseason.
Ohio State junior cornerback Tyreke Johnson announced on Wednesday afternoon that he has entered his name into the transfer portal.
A former five-star prospect from Jacksonville Trinity Christian Academy – the same high school that produced former cornerback Shaun Wade and sophomore running back Marcus Crowley – Johnson played just 136 defensive snaps and recorded only eight tackles in three seasons with the Buckeyes from 2018-20.
With starting cornerbacks Sevyn Banks and Cameron Brown sidelined with injuries this spring, Johnson had an opportunity to carve out a role in Ohio State's secondary. But with fifth-year senior Marcus Williamson returning and several younger players making a push for playing time, including redshirt freshmen Ryan Watts and Lejond Cavazos and early enrollee Denzel Burke, Johnson was unable to find his place.
That’s not even mentioning the fact that sixth-year senior Demario McCall made the switch from wide receiver to cornerback this offseason or that former four-star prospects Jordan Hancock and Jakailin Johnson are set to enroll in classes this summer, thus making the cornerback room even more crowded than before.
Johnson is one of four scholarship players who have entered the transfer portal this offseason, joining wide receivers Mookie Cooper (Missouri) and Jameson Williams (Alabama) and offensive tackle Max Wray (Colorado). He'll have three years of eligibility remaining at his next school.
His departure puts the Buckeyes at 81 scholarship players on the roster, not including returning seniors like McCall, Williamson, offensive tackle Thayer Munford and defensive tackles Haskell Garrett and Antwuan Jackson, who do not count toward the the 85-man limit.
