Ohio State's new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith had some questionable rosters, but is that enough to put the blame on him for poor production?

Ohio State's new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, has called plays in the NFL for the last seven seasons, whether it was from the coordinator position or from the head coach position.

Overall, his teams put together one good year of offensive production over the last seven. That year in 2020 wasn't just good, it was great. The rest of his years weren't just bad, they bordered on unwatchable.

The question is, how much blame should Smith take for that, or should the buck be passed to the rosters that he was dealt?

The truth, in my opinion, is somewhere in the middle and that helps me start to change my opinion on the hire.

Here are the cards that Smith has been dealt with over his seven years as a play caller.

Quarterback

  • Marcus Mariotta
  • Ryan Tannehill
  • Matt Ryan
  • Josh Rosen
  • Desmond Ridder
  • Taylor Heinicke
  • Russell Wilson
  • Aaron Rodgers
  • Mason Rudolph

Wide Receivers

  • AJ Brown
  • Corey Davis
  • Nick Westbrook-Ikhine
  • Tajae Sharpe
  • Olamide Zaccheaus
  • Drake London
  • Scottie Miller
  • George Pickens
  • DK Metcalf

Running Backs

  • Derrick Henry
  • Dion Lewis
  • D'Onta Foreman
  • Mike Davis
  • Cordarrelle Patterson
  • Tyler Allgeier
  • Bijan Robinson
  • Tyler Warren
  • Kenneth Gainwell

Smith wasn't given the best weapons ever and certainly didn't have the league's best quarterbacks at his disposal. So where does the blame fall?

You could argue that Smith actually got the most out of his teams, especially those teams in Atlanta that he was only able to muster 7-10 for three straight seasons. However, Smith's two years in Pittsburgh, when he had Russell Wilson and an old Aaron Rodgers, he probably underachieved.

The truth has to lie somewhere in the middle, but the way that I see it is that it's on the offensive coordinator to solve the issues that he is presented with, and there was a very clear lack of that, especially in Pittsburgh.

Those Steelers' teams featured great defenses but continued to come up short on offense. Ultimately, I believe that Smith is fine as a play caller, but Ohio State needs more than fine to get back to where they want to go.

Similar things were said by many and by me last year when the Buckeyes got Matt Patricia as their defensive coordinator, and I hope that I'm forced to eat my words at this time next year.
