Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith officially overtakes former teammate Emeka Egbuka as the all-time leader in catches at Ohio State.

It took just five football games for Jeremiah to officially chase down the Ohio State all-time catch record from his former teammate Emeka Egbuka.

On Saturday against the Iowa Hawkeyes, Smith registered catches 205 and 206 to pass Egbuka's record of 205 catches that he set from 2021-2024.

Smith is widely regarded in college football as the best wide receiver without any debate at all. He is in conversations about being the best player in the sport, and even that argument is tough to find anyone better than him.

If there were a receiver that was built in a lab, it would be Jeremiah Smith. He is a physical force to be reckoned with. He stands at 6'4", weighing in at 222 pounds. Not only that, all of his athletic abilities are maxed out. He is faster than your fastest player, quicker than your quickest an stronger than your strongest.

He is already so good, but coming into this season, he somehow found a way to take his game to a completely different level. He came into this season with no weaknesses and then just maximized his strengths.

It has been so easy this season for Smith as his stat lines already look like this:

  • Ball State: 8 Catches, 151 Yards, 2 TD
  • Texas: 8 Catches, 161 Yards, 1 TD
  • Kent State: 5 Catches, 85 Yards
  • Illinois: 12 Catches, 217 Yards, 4 TD

Those are simply video game numbers, and they somehow look totally normal for the Buckeyes' star.

The incredible reality is that what Smith has done through two and a half seasons is downright remarkable. A record that took Egbuka a total of 49 games to accomplish took Smith 34 games.

At his current per-game pace, if he were to play 49 games, he would have 291 career catches, which would likely never be touched at Ohio State.

Smith has been special as a Buckeye. There are not enough superlatives to properly credit what he has done and who he is as a player. He now has the Buckeyes' record for yards, catches, and touchdowns and is the Buckeyes' all-time wide receiver triple crown.

For the Buckeyes now, they need him to continue to be special. Ohio State's team is not a perfect one this year. The Buckeyes are trying to get back to being National Champions, and for them to do it, they need everything that Smith can give them.

He has been incredible to this point in the season and because of his work, he is the all-time leader in catches in Ohio State history.
