Ohio State's young star wide receivers have a major opportunity on their hands on Saturday thanks to a couple of injuries that have lingered throughout Maryland week.
It's Thursday of Maryland week, and the Buckeyes have two critical members of their offense lodged comfortably on the injury report. Wide receivers Devin McCuin and Brandon Inniss have taken up all of the starting reps behind Jeremiah Smith at the start of the season, but the door might be cracked open for some of the young players this week.
The two freshman Buckeyes that this fanbase is most excited for are wide receivers Chris Henry Jr. and Brock Boyd. So far in their limited time, both guys have shown incredible promise in two completely separate ways.
Henry Jr. has already hauled in two touchdown passes in his first five games as a Buckeye. He showed incredible speed and explosion against Kent State when he caught a hitch route and turned it into a 75-yard touchdown.
There is an argument to be made that he could have three or four more touchdown catches if it weren't for a couple of bad drops.
Boyd, on the other hand, has impressively shown that he isn't afraid of anything. He has been a key component of the Buckeyes run game. He has consistently been a force player for Ohio State and has been willing to dig out safeties and linebackers in the run game.
That's an impressive feat as a veteran receiver, and it is an extremely impressive accomplishment as a true freshman. These two players are going to be staples in Columbus for a very long time.
Saturday feels like the perfect time for them both to have their true coming out party.
From the looks of it, if McCuin and Inniss are down for this game, Boyd and Henry Jr. will be next up. They will get the lion's share of snaps early on in the football game, and then if, when, it becomes a blowout, they will have them all in the back half of the game.
This is certainly not my prediction of 100-yard, multiple-touchdown games for either of these guys, but it is going to be fun to see these guys with the ball in their hands. There will be a lot of evidence of growth from both guys from early in the season until now.
Furthermore, it will be a look into the future of the Ohio State wide receiver room. For the next three years, it is going to be these two guys leading the way for the Buckeyes, and Saturday will be the first opportunity to see it consistently.
Saturday should be a very fun day for the Buckeyes in what will likely be a big win. Along the way, we are going to get a glimpse into the future of the Ohio State wide receiver room.
