Ohio State superstar Jeremiah Smith cemented himself in the Buckeyes' record books on Saturday against Kent State.
Ohio State superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is officially cemented in the Buckeyes' record books for the rest of time.
On Saturday, during the first quarter against the Kent State Golden Flashes, Smith made history. With the Buckeyes up 7-0 in the first quarter, quarterback Julian Sayin went to Smith on their second drive. Smith broke in on a slant route and gained 23 yards to overtake Jenkins as the top Ohio State wide receiver.
With that catch, he officially over took another Buckeye legend, Michael Jenkins, surpassing his 2,898 receiving yards. Jenkins set that record from 2001 to 2003 which is incredibly impressive considering that era of football.
Back to Smith, Jeremiah has been just as advertised from the very second he stepped onto campus. His career began with head coach Ryan Day fake fainting at the podium when he officially committed to the Buckeyes.
I don't even think Day could have envisioned just how perfect Smith's career would be. Smith has had legitimately zero off-field issues, and in an era when it is so easy to fall in love with the money, the cars, and the fame, he has fallen in love with the work.
Smith has a rare mindset to be the best and will let nothing get in the way of that. Just this offseason, he had the opportunity to go to his hometown school that just beat the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff for $10 million, but turned it down. His legacy was too important for him to leave the Buckeyes, and he stayed put.
Smith isn't done yet, not even close. He has the next two major receiving records in reach. The next one that is likely to fall is the touchdown record, which he just needs five touchdowns to overtake Chris Olave's mark of 35 career touchdowns.
The last one that will go is the catch record which he trails by 26 catches to Emeka Egbuka.
The best part about Smith is that none of this matters to him. He is going to go down as the unquestioned best wide receiver in Ohio State history and will likely be one of the all-time great wide receivers in the history of college football. All of that is nice, but this guy just wants to win.
He'll do whatever it takes for the Buckeyes to win the National Championship in his final year and continue to improve his resume. Good for him is that the Buckeyes need him at his best for them to even have a chance.
Jeremiah Smith is already considered to be the best wide receiver in Ohio State history, and now he is securing his place at the top of the record books by making history on Saturday.
