On this week’s episode of The Jones Report, Sooners Roundtable publisher Tyler Jones and OkState Roundtable editor Thomas Bridges dive in with all of the details about their new venture.
Jones and Bridges discuss what they have in-store for their coverage of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, as well as NASCAR in the coming weeks.
In the Big 12/SEC Breakdown segment, Bridges asked Jones about Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables’ future with the Sooners, and how important this Saturday’s game is against Tennessee. Jones believes that Venables’ job isn’t in jeopardy just yet for a number of factors.
He believes that Venables’ situation is different at Oklahoma compared to James Franklin at Penn State, as well as Brian Kelly at LSU for a number of reasons. Although Venables has not come close to the success that Franklin and Kelly, Jones says Venables is well-liked in the Sooner community, carrying himself with respect on and off the field. Everyone wants to see Venables succeed, not the same can be said for Franklin and Kelly at their former schools.
Jones goes on to add that the retirement of Oklahoma athletics director Joe Castiglione is also a big factor as well. The Sooners are unlikely to want Castiglione to have to fire a coach, and do a coaching search for a replacement in what is supposed to be a year of celebration for Joe C’s final year with the university.
Another point that Jones brings up is that there isn’t a demand from the Sooner boosters to pay Venables’ buyout, which is $34.9 million after the 2025 season. The money situation right now is prioritizing Oklahoma’s facilities and NIL.
Meanwhile in Stillwater, Bridges brought up how this is likely Oklahoma State's best chance to get a win this season, as they face Kansas. Oklahoma State has lost 14-straight conference games. The Jayhawks are coming off of a disappointing loss last week to Kansas State, and are fighting for bowl eligibility at 4-4.
This Saturday’s visit to Lawrence is also a reunion for some on Oklahoma State’s coaching staff. The guys discuss a funny story about interim defensive coordinator Clint Bowen returning to Kansas and eating his favorite pizza. Interim head coach Doug Meacham also served on staff previously at Kansas with Bowen.
Also on the show, the guys have reaction to Brian Kelly’s firing, the latest in the NFL on the Chiefs vs. Bills game, as well as trade rumors on Maxx Crosby and Trey Hendrickson. Plus, Jones chats it up with former Oklahoma City guard Jeremy Lamb on the latest news in the NBA.
