Mike Gundy jumped on Cameo for a quick Cowboy Hockey shoutout, his first time appearing since being fired in September

STILLWATER, Okla. —

For 59 days, Mike Gundy was a ghost. Fired September 23 after a 3-9 disaster and twenty years as head football coach, the winningest man in Oklahoma State history vanished. No exit interview. No podcast. No deer-hunting YouTube rant. Radio silence. Straight ghosted.

Then, on November 18, the Oklahoma State Cowboy Hockey X account dropped a 28-second cameo video featuring Mike Gundy. It’s noted Gundy recently rejoined Cameo, where, for $125, Mike would film you a selfie video.

There he was: black hoodie, wind blown hair, visor pulled low, squinting into his phone like it personally insulted his family. Same cracked voice, same awkward stare. First public appearance since the axe fell, and the message was this:

“Oklahoma State fans, I’m hearing we’re a hockey school now. How about that? Oklahoma State Hockey. You guys better get your tickets right now to Bedlam, February 28th. I need to come see that myself. I’m excited. I like me some hockey. I’m fired up. Go Pokes! Hockey. I love that.”

That’s it. No mention of the firing, the buyout, the transfer portal exodus, or the successor who replaced him. Just a fired football coach aggressively selling tickets to a club hockey game against OU at Tulsa’s BOK Center.

The internet detonated.

•  “Go Pokes (not you football) HOCKEY.

What a time to be alive!”

•  “Did not have Mike Gundy plugs OSU hockey on my bingo card for Gundy’s return to public life”

•  “Love this level of trolling and kudos to the hockey club for the awesome promo”

The clip racked up hundreds of thousands of views in 24 hours. Replies poured in as fast. Gundy photoshopped onto a Zamboni, Pistol Pete wielding a goalie stick, captions screaming “We’re a hockey school now” in bold.

For context, Oklahoma State’s ACHA Division II team didn’t even exist when Gundy took the football job in 2005. Now, two months after he’s canned, the ex-coach is the loudest voice in the rink. The Feb. 28 “Bedlam on Ice” tickets started moving the second the video hit. Though, I will say that Oklahoma State Hockey, for what it is, is pretty damn good so far.  Mission accomplished.

So there it is, Mike Gundy’s grand re-entry into public life. Some bitterness, no scoreboard, just pure, unfiltered promotion for a sport played on frozen water in a state that barely freezes. Sixty days of nothing, then straight to “I like me some hockey.”

Classic Gundy. Never does anything normal.

See you at the rink, Coach.
