Alex Conover is officially headed to professional baseball. The Oklahoma State outfielder became the Cowboys' first 2026 MLB Draft selection after the Padres picked him in the fourth round. His selection also headlined another strong draft class for Oklahoma State baseball.

Alex Conover's dream became reality this weekend.

The Oklahoma State outfielder heard his name called in the fourth round of the 2026 MLB Draft, becoming the first Cowboy selected this year after the San Diego Padres made him the No. 134 overall pick.

A fourth-round selection represents more than simply hearing your name called.

It reflects an organization's belief that a player has the talent to develop into a future major leaguer.

For Conover, that opportunity came after two productive seasons in Stillwater, where he developed into one of the Cowboys' most complete offensive players.

Conover put together a breakout campaign in 2026, slashing .357/.476/.625 while hitting 14 home runs, driving in 44 runs and stealing 16 bases. Just as impressive was his plate discipline, finishing the season with 44 walks and 44 strikeouts, a testament to his balanced approach at the plate.

Those numbers steadily elevated Conover's draft stock throughout the spring.

He wasn't simply a power hitter.

He consistently got on base, controlled the strike zone and impacted games in multiple ways, making him one of the Big 12's most dangerous offensive players.

The Padres clearly saw enough to make him one of the first college position players selected on Day 1 of the draft.

Now, Conover begins the next chapter of his baseball career.

Professional baseball presents an entirely different challenge.

The daily grind of the minor leagues, stronger competition and the climb through a deep farm system all await him.

Hearing his name called in the fourth round is validation of everything he accomplished during his time at Oklahoma State.

It's also another reminder of the development taking place under head coach Josh Holliday.

Year after year, Oklahoma State continues to send players to professional baseball, and Conover is the latest Cowboy to turn a successful collegiate career into an opportunity at the next level.

Conover also headlined another productive MLB Draft for Oklahoma State.

As the draft continued beyond the opening rounds, additional Cowboys heard their names called, once again showcasing the depth of talent within the program.

Along with Conover's fourth-round selection by the Padres, Dylan Bowen was selected in the fifth round by the Reds, Hudson Barrett went in the eight round to the Rockies  and Mario Pesca was chosen in the ninth round by the Guardians.

Together, the group gives Oklahoma State another impressive draft class and reinforces the Cowboys' reputation as one of college baseball's most consistent pipelines to professional baseball.

For Conover, though, day one on Saturday belonged to him.

Years of work in Stillwater culminated in one unforgettable moment.

Now, the next goal begins.

From Boone Pickens Stadium's neighbor at O'Brate Stadium to professional baseball, Alex Conover has earned his opportunity.
