Eric Morris praised Drew Mestemaker's toughness despite Oklahoma State's 35-32 loss to Houston. Mestemaker threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns but struggled with pressure and turnovers. Morris explained what went wrong and why he still believes in his quarterback.
HOUSTON, Texas — Oklahoma State head coach Eric Morris knows Drew Mestemaker wasn't at his best against Houston, but the Cowboys' quarterback showed something that continues to impress his coach: toughness.
Following No. 18 Oklahoma State's 35-32 loss to No. 20 Houston on Saturday night, Morris acknowledged the mistakes that contributed to the Cowboys' first Big 12 defeat while praising Mestemaker's determination to keep battling.
"Overall, probably not his best performance, but he's maybe the toughest kid on our team," Morris said. "He continued to battle. His competitive character is through the roof. He gave us a chance at the end."
Mestemaker finished 22-of-34 passing for 365 yards and three touchdowns, extending his streak of 300-yard passing performances to five consecutive games. However, the final numbers don't fully illustrate the difficulties he faced throughout the contest.
Houston's Pressure Creates Early Problems
Houston entered Saturday's matchup with one of the Big 12's most disruptive defenses, and the Cougars made life difficult for Mestemaker during the first half. The Cowboys struggled to establish offensive consistency, managing just three points before halftime despite moving inside Houston's 5-yard line on their first two possessions.
Mestemaker completed only six of his 15 first-half passes for 124 yards, throwing an interception as Oklahoma State fell behind 14-3. Morris explained that Houston's defensive approach created problems beyond the quarterback's individual execution.
"I thought he was getting pressure; early on, they did a nice job with some twist game, and they hit us with some zero blitzes at times," Morris said.
The Cowboys' head coach also pointed to a missed hot route by a receiver that left Mestemaker without an immediate option against the blitz.
Houston's pressure, protection challenges and missed opportunities all contributed to an uncharacteristically uneven first half for an Oklahoma State offense that had been gaining momentum throughout its four-game winning streak.
The Cowboys also lost the turnover battle 2-1, with Mestemaker responsible for both Oklahoma State giveaways.
Mestemaker Responds With Dominant Second Half
Despite those struggles, Mestemaker delivered one of his most productive halves of the season after halftime. The Oklahoma State quarterback completed 16 of 19 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns over the final two quarters.
The Cowboys scored 29 second-half points, finding the end zone on four of their five possessions after intermission.
Mestemaker connected with Wyatt Young for a touchdown and later found Caleb Hawkins on a 66-yard catch-and-run score that helped keep Oklahoma State within striking distance.
His final touchdown drive demonstrated the competitiveness Morris emphasized after the game. Trailing by 11 points late in the fourth quarter, Mestemaker helped engineer another scoring possession, using both his arm and legs to move the Cowboys downfield. He eventually connected with Justin Bowick for an 8-yard touchdown before finding Bowick again for the two-point conversion, trimming Houston's lead to 35-32.
Oklahoma State never got another offensive possession, however, as Houston converted the necessary late downs to run out the clock.
A Performance With Lessons and Encouragement
Mestemaker's performance illustrated both the challenges Oklahoma State must address and the resilience that has helped the Cowboys emerge as a Big 12 contender. His early turnovers and missed scoring opportunities proved costly in a three-point loss, especially with Houston quarterback Conner Weigman throwing for 343 yards and five touchdowns.
Yet Mestemaker's second-half response provided another example of his ability to produce under pressure. For Morris, that competitive mentality remains one of the quarterback's defining qualities. The challenge moving forward is translating that toughness into more consistent execution across all four quarters.
Oklahoma State fell to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play with the loss, snapping its four-game winning streak. The Cowboys return to Boone Pickens Stadium to face Colorado during America's Greatest Homecoming, giving Mestemaker and the offense another opportunity to respond.
After a difficult night in Houston, Morris made it clear that his confidence in his quarterback's competitive character remains intact.
