Houston leads the FBS in third-down conversion percentage, but Eric Morris believes Oklahoma State's defensive success Saturday starts on FIRST down. With the Cowboys riding a four-game winning streak, stopping the run and forcing long-yardage situations could be the key to beating the Cougars.

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State's defense faces one of its toughest challenges of the season Saturday when the Cowboys travel to Houston.

The Cougars enter the matchup leading the FBS in third-down conversion percentage, presenting a significant test for an Oklahoma State defense that has shown improvement under head coach Eric Morris. But for Morris, slowing down Houston on third down starts well before the Cougars reach that situation.

“Houston's third-down offense is so good because their first- and second-down offense is so good,” Morris said during his weekly media availability.

The Oklahoma State head coach explained that Houston's efficiency on early downs frequently creates manageable situations, allowing the Cougars to remain aggressive and unpredictable.

“If you look at efficiency rate and start at first down and work your way down, it usually goes hand in hand when you look at analytics,” Morris said.

Winning First Down Could Determine the Outcome

Morris believes Oklahoma State must disrupt Houston's offensive rhythm immediately rather than relying on its defense to consistently escape difficult third-down situations.

“For us, we have to do well on first down and put them in uncomfortable second-and-long situations,” Morris said.

Houston's ability to establish its running game, utilize its tight ends and distribute the football to multiple playmakers makes the Cougars particularly difficult to defend in short-yardage situations.

Morris emphasized that Houston's offensive scheme creates problems because it can attack defenses in several ways.

“They do a good job with their scheme on third down getting it to multiple players,” Morris said. “Backs who get downhill and big tight ends like we talked about. Creates a problem.”

The Cowboys will need to tackle effectively, maintain disciplined run fits and force Houston into longer passing situations to prevent the Cougars from controlling possession.

Oklahoma State Looks to Build on Defensive Improvement

The Cowboys enter Saturday's matchup following a 42-28 victory over UCF, during which Oklahoma State allowed just seven second-half points. Despite that improvement, Morris acknowledged his defense took a step backward in certain situations against the Knights.

“Ours has been really good despite taking a step back last week with third- and fourth-down defense,” Morris said.

Oklahoma State linebacker Tate Romney believes communication will be especially important against Houston.

“We've shown we can stop the run,” Romney said. “If we can communicate, then we don't have a hard time stopping third-down conversions.”

Romney stressed that defensive success ultimately depends on all 11 players understanding their responsibilities and reacting quickly.

“Really, it just comes down to everyone being on the same page and playing fast,” Romney said.

A Battle of Strengths in Houston

Saturday's matchup presents a compelling test between Houston's efficient offense and an Oklahoma State defense looking to establish consistency.

The Cougars have demonstrated an ability to sustain drives, while the Cowboys have shown they can make adjustments and respond when challenged.

Morris understands that preventing manageable third downs will be essential to keeping Houston's offense off the field.

“It'll be a battle between a good third-down defense and third-down offense, but first down will play a big part,” Morris said.

Oklahoma State enters the contest riding a four-game winning streak and looking to remain unbeaten in Big 12 play.

The Cowboys and Cougars are scheduled to kick off Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT on FOX.

If Oklahoma State can consistently win the early-down battle, it could significantly reduce the opportunities for Houston's nation-leading third-down offense to dictate the game.
