Former Oklahoma State golfer Wyndham Clark enters the final round of the U.S. Open with a six-shot lead, and history is firmly on his side. Twenty of the last 21 players to hold a lead that large after 54 holes went on to win, with Greg Norman's 1996 Masters collapse the lone exception.

At some point, the conversation around Wyndham Clark shifts from comeback to inevitability.

The former Oklahoma State golfer enters the final round of the U.S. Open with a six-shot lead, the third-largest 54-hole advantage seen at the championship since World War II.

And history says that's usually enough.

In fact, 20 of the last 21 golfers to hold a lead of six shots or more after 54 holes went on to win.

The lone exception?

Greg Norman's infamous collapse at the 1996 Masters.

Not exactly a list anyone wants to join.

For Clark, this latest position atop the leaderboard feels less like a surprise and more like the continuation of a remarkable stretch of golf.

After winning the Byron Nelson earlier this season, Clark entered the U.S. Open riding a streak of top-15 finishes and proving that the ups and downs of the past year were firmly behind him.

Now, he's 18 holes away from another major championship.

And perhaps another reminder that his comeback is complete.

Clark's connection to Oklahoma State remains an important part of his story.

Before transferring to Oregon following the tragic loss of his mother, Clark spent three seasons in Stillwater and was named the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2014.

His collegiate journey may have ended elsewhere, but some of the foundations of his success were built in orange and black.

And while Clark has stolen the spotlight this week, he hasn't been the only former Cowboy making noise.

Sam Stevens enters the final round tied for second, six shots behind Clark, tied along with Scottie Scheffler, who is going for the career grand slam. Stevens has never won a PGA Tour event. To be up there at a major? Impressive.

The thought of two former Oklahoma State golfers sitting first and tied for second at the U.S. Open would've seemed hard to imagine when the week began.

Now, it's reality.

Of course, golf has a way of humbling everyone.

No lead is completely safe.

Just ask Greg Norman.

But history suggests Clark is in command.

And based on the way he's played over the last several months, it's hard to imagine anyone being better equipped to finish the job.

One day after asking whether Wyndham Clark was back, the question has changed.

Can anybody catch him?

History says probably not.

And if history holds one more time, another U.S. Open trophy could soon be heading to a former Cowboy.
