Jacie Hoyt and Stailee Heard believe Oklahoma State's team chemistry could help fuel a historic season. At Big 12 Media Day, Hoyt praised players who chose to build something special in Stillwater, while Heard described a tighter-than-ever sisterhood inside the Cowgirls' locker room.
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State women's basketball enters the new season with plenty of expectations, but head coach Jacie Hoyt believes one of the Cowgirls' biggest strengths has little to do with what happens on the court. It's the relationships being built away from it.
During Wednesday's Big 12 Basketball Media Day, Hoyt and guard Stailee Heard emphasized the chemistry developing within Oklahoma State's roster and the shared belief that this group can take the program to new heights. For Hoyt, the early weeks of practice have provided plenty of reasons for optimism.
"It's been so fun bringing everyone together," Hoyt said. "I haven't wanted practice to end."
Hoyt Sees a Team Determined to Make History
Oklahoma State enters the season with heightened expectations after being selected as the preseason favorite in the Big 12. But Hoyt believes the Cowgirls' ambitions extend beyond preseason recognition.
She praised her players for their competitive approach and willingness to choose Oklahoma State as a place where they could build something special together.
"They bet on themselves and didn't chase after schools they thought would've been the big time," Hoyt said. "They said, 'We want to make Oklahoma State the big time.'"
That mentality has stood out to Hoyt as she continues bringing together a roster with high expectations.
Rather than viewing Oklahoma State simply as a steppingstone, Hoyt believes her players are motivated by the opportunity to elevate the program. She also emphasized the importance of self-confidence and the willingness to depend on teammates.
"They understand that they need each other to make history and take the program to a place it's never been," Hoyt said.
For a program seeking to establish itself among the nation's best, that collective approach could become particularly important once conference play begins. Hoyt believes her players have already demonstrated the competitive spirit and commitment necessary to pursue those goals.
Heard Says the Cowgirls' Sisterhood Is Stronger Than Ever
While Hoyt sees that commitment during practices, Heard believes the team's chemistry is just as evident inside the locker room. The veteran guard credited Hoyt for helping establish the foundation of the program's culture but emphasized that the players have taken ownership of building relationships with one another.
"Our sisterhood has been tighter than it's ever been," Heard said. "We have no cliques anywhere. We all get along."
According to Heard, the connections between teammates have become so strong that players often continue spending time together long after practice ends. She described remaining in the locker room for another 30 minutes simply because she enjoys talking with her teammates. For Heard, those everyday interactions are helping create an environment where players genuinely support one another.
"That culture will take us a long way because we have each other's backs," Heard said.
Her comments reinforce Hoyt's belief that Oklahoma State's success will depend on more than individual talent. The Cowgirls are working to build a team where everyone understands their role and recognizes the importance of contributing to a shared goal.
High Expectations, Shared Purpose
The Cowgirls have plenty of reasons to feel confident heading into the season. Oklahoma State was picked to finish first in the Big 12 preseason poll, reflecting the expectations surrounding Hoyt's program. But preseason recognition alone won't determine how far the Cowgirls advance.
Hoyt's comments suggest she understands the importance of creating a roster capable of handling those expectations together. Heard's perspective offers a glimpse into how that process is developing behind the scenes.
From competitive practices to conversations inside the locker room, Oklahoma State is emphasizing the relationships that could help the Cowgirls navigate the challenges ahead. And if Hoyt and Heard are right, the foundation for a memorable season is already taking shape.
For Oklahoma State, the goal isn't simply to meet expectations. It's to make history together.
