Oklahoma State added another talented arm to its pitching staff with former Ole Miss pitcher Payton Kennedy. A Top-25 recruit coming out of high school, Kennedy now gets a fresh start in Stillwater and the opportunity to earn the innings that were limited during her freshman season.
Jacie Hoyt isn't the only Oklahoma State coach making moves through the transfer portal. So is Ken Gajewski.
The Cowgirls have added another arm to their pitching staff with the commitment of former Ole Miss pitcher Payton Kennedy.
At first glance, Kennedy's college numbers might not jump off the page.
As a freshman with the Rebels, she appeared in limited action, pitching just 4.2 innings.
Oklahoma State isn't recruiting her based on what she did in one season at Ole Miss.
It's recruiting her because of what she was before she ever stepped onto a college campus.
Coming out of high school, Kennedy was considered one of the nation's premier pitching prospects, earning a No. 25 overall ranking in her recruiting class from Extra Inning Softball.
That type of talent doesn't simply disappear.
Sometimes, all a player needs is opportunity.
And Oklahoma State may be able to provide exactly that.
The Cowgirls entered the offseason looking to add depth and competition to the pitching staff, making Kennedy a logical addition.
Instead of waiting behind an established rotation, she'll now have the chance to compete for meaningful innings in Stillwater.
That's often one of the biggest reasons players enter the transfer portal.
It's not always about leaving a program.
Sometimes it's about finding the right fit.
For Kennedy, Oklahoma State represents a fresh start and an opportunity to show why she was once viewed as one of the nation's top young pitchers.
For the Cowgirls, it's another example of the coaching staff betting on upside.
That's been a common theme throughout the offseason.
Rather than simply filling roster spots, Oklahoma State has targeted players with proven talent, high ceilings and the potential to make an immediate impact.
Kennedy fits that profile.
And while expectations should remain realistic for any player making a transition, it's easy to understand why the Cowgirls made this move.
Highly regarded recruits often need time.
Sometimes a change of scenery is all it takes.
If Kennedy develops into the pitcher many expected coming out of high school, this transfer could end up being one of Oklahoma State's more underrated additions of the offseason.
At the very least, she gives the Cowgirls another talented option in the circle.
At best?
Oklahoma State may have landed a former elite recruit who's finally in position to reach her full potential.
That's exactly the kind of gamble championship programs are willing to make.
