Opening weekend in college baseball is supposed to generate excitement.

It doesn't get much bigger than this.

According to reports, the Cowboys will open the 2027 season with a three-game series at USC. The series is expected to be a one-time event, with the Trojans not making a return trip to Stillwater.

And while fans would love to see a home-and-home, it's hard not to appreciate the matchup itself.

These are two of the biggest brands in college baseball.

Two programs with rich traditions.

Two teams that expect to be playing meaningful games in June.

And now they'll meet before many teams have even settled into the season.

From a baseball standpoint, the series is fascinating.

Opening weekends are often spent tuning up against smaller opponents and trying to answer questions about a new roster.

Not this time.

Oklahoma State will immediately be thrown into a postseason-like atmosphere against one of the sport's blue bloods.

And honestly, that's not a bad thing.

Over the past several years, we've seen how important RPI and strength of schedule have become. Playing quality opponents away from home can pay dividends when postseason seeding arrives.

More than that, it tells you something about the expectations inside the program.

This isn't a team interested in easing into the season.

It's one willing to challenge itself from Day One.

And perhaps that's fitting for a program with Omaha aspirations.

Programs hoping to make deep postseason runs shouldn't be afraid of marquee matchups.

They should embrace them.

Because if Oklahoma State expects to compete with the nation's best in June, there's nothing wrong with seeing one of those teams in February.

Even if it comes 1,300 miles away from O'Brate Stadium.

Perhaps the most encouraging thing about the series is what it says about the mindset inside the program.

It would have been easy after the bitter ending to the 2026 season to take a different approach.

After all, Oklahoma State was just a few outs away from advancing before seeing its season end in heartbreaking fashion in extra innings of the super regional final.

Some programs might spend the offseason trying to forget.

Instead, the Cowboys appear to be embracing the challenge.

They're not interested in reliving that memory.

They're interested in making sure it doesn't happen again.

And if the goal is to return to Omaha, there's no sense in avoiding the teams and environments that help prepare you for June.

That's why opening the season against USC feels so fitting.

The sour taste of how this season season ended hasn't changed the expectations.

If anything, it's reinforced them.

Because programs with Omaha aspirations don't hide from challenges.

They run toward them.

And while the lack of a return trip to Stillwater may disappoint some fans, the opportunity to watch two historic programs collide on opening weekend is something college baseball fans can appreciate.

Heavyweight fights don't always need a second act.

Sometimes one weekend is enough.

And if the Cowboys are fortunate, it could be the beginning of another memorable season.
