Josh Holliday and the Oklahoma State Cowboy Baseball team takes down the Sooners in Tulsa, at OneOk Field, amid an early call due to inclement weather in the area
TULSA, Okla. — The Oklahoma State Cowboys delivered an offensive statement in the Bedlam game, smashing four home runs to defeat the No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners 7-3 in a weather-shortened eight inning contest Tuesday night at ONEOK Field.
The midweek rivalry matchup, played in neutral downtown Tulsa, flexed the Cowboys’ long ball power before lightning and heavy thunderstorms forced the game to be called in the bottom of the eighth.
Oklahoma State wasted no time getting to work. In the top of the first, Brock Thompson doubled and Kollin Ritchie followed with a two-run homer to right-center field for a quick 2-0 lead. Campbell Smithwick then launched a solo shot to right, making it 3-0 before OU recorded an out.
The Cowboys added three more in the fourth as Smithwick crushed his second homer of the night to center, and Garrett Shull immediately followed with a two-run blast to right, pushing the advantage to 6-0.
OSU tacked on one final run in the sixth when Smithwick singled, stole second, and scored on consecutive wild pitches.
Smithwick led the charge, going 3 for 4 with three runs scored, two RBIs, two home runs, and a stolen base. Ritchie and Shull each contributed a homer and two RBIs. The Cowboys finished with seven hits but committed three errors.
On the mound, starter TP Wentworth tossed 3⅓ scoreless innings before exiting with an apparent forearm issue. Reliever Brennan Phillips earned the victory (2-2), allowing two hits over 3⅔ innings while striking out four.
For Oklahoma, Michael Catalano (3-3) took the loss, surrendering six runs on five hits in four innings.
The Sooners mounted a late charge in the eighth. After two walks, standout third baseman Jaxon Willits launched a three-run homer to left, trimming the deficit to 7-3 and injecting brief momentum. But as the bases cleared, severe weather descended on the area. Lightning strikes and pouring rain prompted a delay, and after approximately 45 minutes, officials officially called the contest. OU recorded five hits with no errors.
Inclement weather had loomed throughout the evening, with scattered showers escalating into a full thunderstorm system that included lightning and a regional tornado watch. Fans at ONEOK Field endured multiple brief delays earlier, but the final lightning display proved that was enough, ending the Bedlam battle prematurely.
The victory improved Oklahoma State to 23-14 overall and marked the program’s 38th win in 54 meetings against OU during Josh Holliday’s 14-season tenure.
For Holliday, who has led the Cowboys to a College World Series appearance, multiple Big 12 titles, and consistent postseason berths, recent criticism has mounted amid an inconsistent 2026 campaign and questions about the team’s trajectory.
This in-state rival win provides valuable breathing room and positive momentum for Holliday and the team as the season moves continues.
Adding to the week’s success for Oklahoma State diamond sports, the Cowgirl softball team also defeated the Sooners 6-4 in their Bedlam clash at Devon Park in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night. Both OSU baseball and softball claimed victories over their in-state rivals within the same week…it doesn’t get better than that.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys return home to O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater for a critical Big 12 weekend series against Kansas, beginning Friday, April 17. With the bats showing signs of heating up, Holliday’s squad will look to carry the Tulsa momentum into conference play and gain back some postseason hopes.
