After a summer dominated by offensive commitments, Oklahoma State finally added another defender. Three-star safety Chayce Davis gives Skyler Cassity his second defensive pledge and adds more athleticism to a 2027 class that continues to take shape.
Do you like the speed and explosiveness being added on defense?
After weeks of offensive additions, Oklahoma State finally gave Skyler Cassity and the defense something to celebrate.
Three-star Texas safety Chayce Davis announced his commitment to the Cowboys, becoming the second defensive pledge in Oklahoma State's 2027 recruiting class and the ninth overall commitment.
At this point, the commitment almost comes as a relief.
The offensive side of the ball has dominated Oklahoma State's recruiting efforts throughout the summer. Seven of the previous eight commitments were offensive players, including three offensive linemen in the last week alone.
Now, Cassity gets another piece to work with.
And Davis fits exactly what the Cowboys appear to be looking for defensively.
The Texas product is a multi-sport athlete with speed and explosiveness that show up beyond the football field. Davis won the Texas 6A Region II championship in the 300-meter hurdles, ran a 21.15 in the 200 meters and has posted impressive marks in both the high jump and long jump.
Those traits translate well to the secondary, where speed, instincts and athleticism are essential.
More importantly, the commitment signals that Oklahoma State's coaching staff is beginning to bring balance to the class. Eric Morris and offensive line coach Cody Crill have made it clear that protecting the quarterback is a priority, but championships aren't won with offense alone.
Cassity's defense at North Texas showed significant improvement last season, allowing 10 fewer points per game than the year before. Now entering his first season in Stillwater, the 31-year-old coordinator is beginning to put his stamp on the future of the program.
Interestingly, both of Oklahoma State's defensive commitments so far have one thing in common: speed. Fellow defensive back Bryson Brown also turned heads with his athleticism, giving Cassity two prospects who fit the mold of the modern Big 12 defense. In a conference loaded with explosive offenses, having defenders who can run and cover space is a necessity.
Meanwhile, the rest of the class continues to reveal the priorities of Eric Morris and his staff. Quarterback Carson White, tight end Talan Scott, wide receiver Cooper Hooker and offensive linemen Chase Clark, Sonny Mullen and Jake Baker headline a group built around supporting the Cowboys' offensive identity.
While offense has dominated the headlines, the addition of Davis shows Oklahoma State is beginning to add pieces on the other side of the ball as well.
Recruiting the Class of 2027 is still in its early stages, but the message from Oklahoma State's latest commitment is becoming clear.
Eric Morris may be building the offense.
But Skyler Cassity is quietly building a defense filled with speed.
And in today's Big 12, that might be just as important.
