Oklahoma State golfers Ethan Fang and Preston Stout contributed for Team USA on Day 1 of the Walker Cup in Ireland. The Cowboys halved their morning foursomes match before Fang earned a crucial singles win, helping the U.S. stay within one point of Great Britain & Ireland entering Sunday.

Two Oklahoma State golfers played prominent roles for Team USA on the opening day of the Walker Cup in Ireland.

Ethan Fang and Preston Stout represented the Cowboys at Lahinch Golf Club on Saturday as the United States began its quest for a sixth consecutive Walker Cup victory against Great Britain and Ireland.

The OSU teammates were paired together for the first match of the morning foursomes session, taking on Stuart Grehan and Eliot Baker.

Fang and Stout battled the GB&I duo through all 18 holes before the match finished tied, earning a half-point for Team USA.

That half-point proved important during a difficult opening session for the Americans. The only full U.S. point of the morning came from Tyler Watts and Miles Russell, who won their match against Luke Poulter and Sam Easterbrook.

Fang and Stout then went their separate ways for the afternoon singles session.

Stout, the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world and reigning NCAA individual champion, faced Grehan in the opening singles match. The two went all the way to the 18th hole before Grehan prevailed on the final hole to earn the point for GB&I.

Fang responded with a crucial result for the United States. The Oklahoma State junior faced reigning U.S. Amateur champion Jack Whaley and once again needed all 18 holes to decide the match. This time, the Cowboy came out on top, defeating Whaley 1 up to secure a full point for Team USA.

Fang's victory was one of the singles wins that helped the Americans remain within striking distance heading into Sunday's final day.

Both Cowboys entered the weekend with Walker Cup experience. Fang and Stout were members of the U.S. team that defeated Great Britain and Ireland 17-9 at Cypress Point in 2025. Stout went 2-2 in that event, while Fang finished 1-2-1.

They returned to Team USA this year as two of the highest-ranked amateurs in the world, with Stout entering the Walker Cup ranked No. 1 and Fang among the top players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

After Saturday's foursomes and singles sessions, Great Britain and Ireland holds a 6½-5½ advantage over the United States. That leaves everything to play for Sunday at Lahinch.

Four more foursomes matches will open the final day before all 10 players from each team compete in afternoon singles.

For Oklahoma State, two Cowboys are right in the middle of the battle for the Walker Cup.
