Oklahoma State continued building its 2027 class with the commitment of three-star running back TJ Lewis. The Illinois native rushed for 1,784 yards and 21 touchdowns last season and chose the Cowboys over Illinois, Indiana and Oklahoma.
Oklahoma State continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail.
The Cowboys picked up another commitment for their 2027 class with three-star running back TJ Lewis announcing his pledge to Oklahoma State.
It's a significant addition for Eric Morris and running backs coach Patrick Cobbs.
Lewis, a 6-foot running back from Illinois, is rated as the No. 41 running back in the country and chose the Cowboys over a list of notable offers that included Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma and several other Power Four programs.
Winning recruiting battles like that matters.
Especially when they're against schools much closer to home.
Lewis put together an impressive 2025 season, carrying the ball 227 times for 1,784 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Those numbers tell the story of a back capable of handling a heavy workload while consistently producing explosive plays.
Now he'll look to bring that production to Stillwater in the coming years.
The commitment also continues a trend under Eric Morris.
While much of the attention surrounding Oklahoma State has focused on the transfer portal and immediate roster improvements, the Cowboys have quietly continued building for the future through high school recruiting.
That's critical.
The transfer portal can address short-term needs.
Recruiting high school talent is what sustains a program.
Lewis gives Oklahoma State another talented offensive piece to develop while also expanding the Cowboys' recruiting footprint beyond state lines.
Landing a player from Illinois over programs like Illinois and Indiana isn't something to overlook.
Neither is beating Oklahoma for a talented offensive prospect.
It's another sign that recruits are buying into what Morris and his staff are building.
For Patrick Cobbs, it's another important recruiting victory as he continues shaping the future of Oklahoma State's running back room.
If Lewis reaches his potential, he'll also have the chance to add his name to one of the richest traditions in Oklahoma State football.
The Cowboys have produced some of college football's greatest running backs, from Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas to Chuba Hubbard and Ollie Gordon II. It's a standard few programs in the country can match.
Lewis still has plenty of work ahead before he ever carries the ball in Stillwater.
But every great Oklahoma State running back started the same way—with a commitment to the Cowboys and the opportunity to prove they belonged.
Now, Lewis has that same opportunity.
Whether he becomes the next great name in Oklahoma State's storied running back lineage will be determined over the next several years, but the potential is certainly there.
As Oklahoma State continues assembling its 2027 recruiting class, Lewis becomes another building block for the future.
If his high school production is any indication, the Cowboys may have landed one of the Midwest's most productive young running backs.
For a program looking to re-establish itself as a Big 12 contender, those are exactly the kinds of recruiting wins that matter most.
