With Avery Johnson sidelined by a neck injury, Kansas State will start Blake Barnett against Oklahoma State. Eric Morris praised Barnett's athleticism, while Cowboys defenders LaDainian Fields and Isaiah Chisom emphasized that their preparation remains unchanged.

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State will face a different quarterback when the Cowboys travel to Manhattan for Saturday's Big 12 matchup against Kansas State.

With starting quarterback Avery Johnson sidelined by a neck injury, the Wildcats will turn to Blake Barnett, who provided a spark in last week's 27–24 overtime loss to Colorado.

Barnett will become Kansas State's fourth different starting quarterback in four consecutive games as the Wildcats continue navigating injuries at the position.

Despite having limited film on Barnett, Oklahoma State head coach Eric Morris has already seen enough to recognize the challenge awaiting his defense.

Barnett provides spark for Kansas State

Barnett entered the Colorado game late in the first quarter, replacing Dillon Duff after Kansas State opened with three consecutive three-and-outs. The junior completed 18 of 28 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns while adding 40 rushing yards on 16 carries. His final touchdown came on an 8-yard pass to Garrett Oakley with two seconds remaining in regulation, forcing overtime.

Kansas State head coach Collin Klein clarified that Barnett's appearance was planned before the game rather than being a reaction to Duff's performance.

"It was part of the plan all along for Blake to get in somewhere in that third, fourth-ish possession," Klein said during Monday's media availability.

Barnett's performance earned him the starting opportunity against Oklahoma State.

"He will start, and he earned that right with how he played," Klein said.

Morris acknowledged that the Cowboys have limited film to evaluate but praised Barnett's ability to extend plays, avoid pressure and find receivers underneath.

"Limited tape, but good tape on him," Morris said.

Morris also noted that Barnett's athleticism presents another challenge for Oklahoma State's defense, particularly when plays break down.

Avery Johnson's injury creates uncertainty

Kansas State's quarterback changes began when Johnson suffered an injury during the Wildcats' game against Kansas on Oct. 17. Johnson has dealt with lingering neck and shoulder issues since the injury and has missed Kansas State's last two games.

The Wildcats subsequently turned to Jacob Knuth against Arizona State before Duff and Barnett shared quarterback duties against Colorado. Klein indicated Monday that Johnson's return this season remains uncertain.

"There's an outside chance, but as this thing goes, it's probably looking longer than not," Klein said.

Johnson's absence has forced Kansas State to adjust offensively, although Barnett's performance against Colorado offered encouragement heading into Saturday.

Oklahoma State defenders maintaining same approach

Despite the change under center, Oklahoma State's defensive players insist their preparation remains consistent. Cornerback LaDainian Fields emphasized that the Cowboys cannot allow a different quarterback to alter their responsibilities.

"We have the same prep for any quarterback, so nothing changes," Fields said.

Linebacker Isaiah Chisom echoed that message, pointing to the mobility of both Johnson and Barnett.

"It doesn't change anything," Chisom said. "They both can run, and we need to make sure no matter who it is, we're doing our job."

Containing Barnett will be especially important for an Oklahoma State defense looking to rebound from Saturday's 51–49 loss to Iowa State. The Cowboys surrendered 581 total yards against the Cyclones, making defensive execution a priority entering another road matchup.

Oklahoma State enters Saturday at 5–3 overall and 3–2 in Big 12 play, needing one more victory to become bowl eligible. Kansas State enters at 4–4 overall and 1–4 in conference play.

Saturday's matchup at Bill Snyder Family Stadium is scheduled for noon CT ON TNT.
