Preston Stout has etched his name into Oklahoma State golf history.

The junior became just the 10th Cowboy to win the NCAA individual championship, capturing the title at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. Stout closed with a final-round 69 to finish at 14-under par, edging Alabama's William Jennings by one stroke. He is the first Oklahoma State golfer to win the NCAA individual crown since Matthew Wolff accomplished the feat in 2019.

Winning has become a familiar theme for Stout. The NCAA title marked the eighth victory of his collegiate career, moving him into a tie for third place on Oklahoma State's all-time wins list alongside Willie Wood. Five of those victories have come this season, setting a program record for the most tournament wins in a single year. Among those wins was the Big 12 Championship, further cementing one of the best individual seasons in school history.

The biggest victory, however, came on college golf's biggest stage.

As NCAA champion, Stout earned an exemption into next month's U.S. Open and would also receive an invitation to the Masters Tournament if he maintains his amateur status through next spring. Currently ranked No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Stout has the option of returning to Stillwater for his senior season before eventually turning professional.

"That's why I'm here. That's why I'm able to win tournaments like this," Stout said. "We have the best team in the world, the best coaching staff in the country."

Oklahoma State head coach Alan Bratton wasn't surprised by the performance.

"He was ready for the moment," Bratton said. "He's built for that. I've seen him do it a number of times."

Stout's path to the title wasn't without drama. After opening the tournament at 1-over par, he rallied over the final three rounds, making up 13 strokes to climb the leaderboard. He appeared to have the championship comfortably in hand after reaching 5-under through 11 holes in the final round and building a five-shot lead.

But the tournament tightened quickly.

Bogeys on holes 12, 14, and 17 allowed Jennings to pull even, leaving Stout needing a response on the final hole. He delivered with a birdie on the par-5 18th to secure the national championship and one of the most significant victories in Oklahoma State golf history.

The win adds to an already impressive résumé that includes appearances in PGA Tour events and a spot on the Walker Cup team, where he competed against many of the world's top amateur golfers.

For now, Stout's focus remains on helping Oklahoma State chase another team national championship. The Cowboys entered match play tied for fourth as they pursue back-to-back NCAA titles after winning the national championship in 2025.

Looking ahead, another question looms: Will Stout return to Stillwater for his senior season or turn professional after one of the greatest individual campaigns in program history?

That answer could come later this summer.
