And honestly, that's exactly the kind of scheduling Oklahoma State should embrace.

Texas A&M joins St. Mary's as the first known non-conference opponents for Steve Lutz and the Cowboys, giving fans an early indication that the second-year head coach isn't interested in taking the easy route.

The Aggies reached the NCAA Tournament last season and consistently rank among the SEC's better programs. Playing them on the road only adds to the challenge.

But that's also what makes the matchup so valuable.

If Oklahoma State hopes to end its five-year NCAA Tournament drought, it needs opportunities to build a résumé. Games against proven tournament teams provide exactly that.

And perhaps more importantly, they provide a measuring stick.

How close are the Cowboys to becoming an NCAA Tournament team themselves?

We'll start finding out in November.

The contrast between styles should also make for an intriguing matchup.

Texas A&M's physicality and SEC pedigree will provide a different challenge than St. Mary's disciplined half-court approach, giving Oklahoma State two quality tests against teams that know what it takes to reach March Madness.

Those games won't define the season.

But they could reveal a lot about it.

There's also value beyond simply collecting wins and losses.

Road games in environments like College Station can prepare teams for what they'll face once Big 12 play begins. Night after night, the conference presents hostile atmospheres and NCAA Tournament-caliber opponents. Playing Texas A&M away from Gallagher-Iba gives Oklahoma State an early taste of that challenge.

And in today's college basketball landscape, quality opponents matter. The NET rankings and NCAA Tournament committee place a premium on strength of schedule, meaning games against teams from the SEC and programs like St. Mary's can pay dividends even if they don't always end in victories.

That's what makes these matchups so encouraging.

Steve Lutz isn't simply scheduling games.

He's scheduling opportunities.

More than anything, these scheduling decisions send a message.

Steve Lutz isn't afraid to challenge his team.

And perhaps that's the biggest takeaway from the early schedule.

The Cowboys aren't acting like a program coming off a one-year turnaround.

They're acting like one with bigger ambitions.

Because programs with NCAA Tournament aspirations don't avoid challenges.

They embrace them.

And with road trips to Texas A&M and a home showdown against St. Mary's already on the books, Oklahoma State won't have to wait long to find out where it stands.
