One week can change everything in golf.

Last Sunday, Viktor Hovland wasn't playing.

He was grinding on the driving range.

After missing the cut at the U.S. Open, Hovland spent nearly four hours working on his game, including an hour dedicated solely to his irons while hitting approximately 230 golf balls.

It appears that work is paying off.

Hovland fired a 6-under 64 in Saturday's third round of the Travelers Championship, capped by a birdie on the 18th hole to grab the solo lead at 20-under par.

The dramatic finish became even bigger moments later.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who began the day tied for the lead, made bogey on the 72nd hole, allowing Hovland to take a one-shot advantage into Sunday's final round.

Now, the former Oklahoma State star is just 18 holes away from his first PGA Tour victory since winning the Valspar Championship in March 2025.

What's perhaps most impressive is how quickly his form has returned.

Hovland opened the season with a top-10 finish at the WM Phoenix Open in February but struggled to consistently contend over the following months.

It wasn't until the RBC Canadian Open a few weeks ago that he finally returned to the top 10.

Then came another setback.

A missed cut at the U.S. Open.

For many players, that could have shaken their confidence.

Instead, Hovland went back to work.

Rather than dwelling on the disappointment, he attacked the problem, spending hours searching for answers while the rest of the field was still competing.

Whatever he found appears to be working.

Through three rounds at TPC River Highlands, Hovland ranks second in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting and third Off the Tee, a combination that has allowed him to once again look like one of the most complete players in the world.

Those are the numbers that defined his remarkable 2023 season, when he captured the Tour Championship and established himself among golf's elite.

Perhaps just as noticeable has been the support surrounding him.

Norwegian fans have been out in force at TPC River Highlands, many already in the United States for the World Cup and taking the opportunity to cheer on one of their country's biggest sports stars.

Their cheers have followed Hovland throughout the week.

Now, they're hoping to witness something special on Sunday.

One more strong round would complete one of the better bounce-back stories of the PGA Tour season.

From a missed cut and marathon practice session just six days ago...

...to standing alone atop the leaderboard with a chance to lift another trophy.

Sometimes, all it takes is one range session to change everything.

Now comes the hardest part.

Finishing the job.
